How do we stop other teams running up the middle?

Our try line defence was awesome in the dragons game, they did well giving the clinical game and amount of possession they had against us, and the backs did produce some great footy for us, but I cant stop worrying about how easy they, and other teams, even when we were on our winning streak last year seem to make easy easy yards up the middle of the park against us.

To many times I see other teams forwards/ second rowers making long lollopping runs up the middle and they arent stopped until Hindy is hanging on grimly  from behind to slow them down while a few other players finally manage to jump on them (No wonder we generally lose without him!). . By the 5th they are deep into our line and our amazing backs have to do all that work again.. often not getting much past half way unless Hayne (or burty, growthe, or mateo to a lesser extent)  pulls off some daring dazzling move.. with thankfully he seems to manage quite often.

We have a legend of a forward in Fui, but so often in that game he hardly managed to gather speed and he was faced with a wall of the Dragons heavies.

I am not overly knowledgable on the finer points of the game when it comes to tactics and roles, and  would like others thoughts on how to stop this and who's (players) job it is to get up quick in defence?

  • I agree that we tend to let teams 'roll' up the field.

It appears to me that we aren't too concerned about letting a team make 60 metres up the field so long as they don't make clean breaks. So our defensive line probably doens't get up as quickly as some others - it is more concerned with keeping a straight line.

It is probably a sacrafice Ando is willing to make.
  • A big stick in the carpark, before the game would help!
