There was a Facebook post this evening showing Tina Turner performing at the 1993 GF.Without a doubt, pre-Super League ,the game we love was fantastic .The powers that be, decided to ignore the old maxim, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
What rules do you all think need to be made,or with the benefit of hindsight, rolled back ,in order to "fix" League?
My 2 cents worth: Parra need to become consistent contenders,1 ref,no bunker, and reduce the interchange so fatigue once again becomes a factor.

Parra need to take a leaf from the roosters book, defence wins matches, BA needs to bolster our defence if we are to become a force. unfortunately i think the bunkers here to stay, i personally think they should do what NFL do, have a tv on the sideline, if a ref needs to make judgement on something, he goes and looks at the footage himself and decides. bring back the shoulder charge, too many grey areas now that slater fought and won his case.
Local football and those types of comps are much better specticals of rugby league then the NRL. Footballers not so much athletes who aren’t afraid to play what’s in front of them. Structure is less predominate and you see rugby league how it’s meant to be played.
Good luck La Pa
great idea Bup and so easy to sort that out!
Still unless the powers that be can see that most fans can see the ‘playing field’ for roosters and broncos etc vs others is less than even, what hope has the game got...plenty of fans have turned away because of what they see as perceived inconsistency being applied. This goes for both onfield decisions and salary cap/TPA matters as well. Fans are sick of being treated as dodos!
Applying consistency and common sense would be a great place to start. Listening to fans who’ve had enough of the blind eye rules applied. Fixing the TPA salary cap rules is a must...it was years ago and almost too late now.
2. Don’t bend over backwards for TV ratings- do what is best for the game itself - the better the product is more ppl will watch - this includes earlier kickoffs, more day games, cancel Thursday night games.
3. More media coverage to fans - media access to players during the past week was truly pathetic.
4. Build up hype for games - through Sydney CBD & Parramatta CBD (neighbouring Homebush) no one would of known a GRAND FINAL was being played in Sydney this week. Build excitement & anticipation with a few adverts, flags, posters, promotions - surly ther is money in the bag for a little GF promotion around the place. But clubs should do this themselves throughout the season as well. Each club only has 12 home games a season - how hard it is the promote the hell out of just 12 games & make each game a game fans MUST attend for one reason or another.
Where to start ….
1) Structure
Split the entire structure of the sport into 2 sections, the Premiership & the Development Pathways. Let the clubs own & run the Premiership in the same manner that the EPL & major US sports are run, with a single club rep from each club forming the steering committee that runs the Premiership, hires its own CEO/Commissioner & senior executives, handles all commercial negotiations & agreements, including broadcast rights and all its revenue & talent sharing processes.
In return, the Premiership agrees to a revenue sharing agreement in perpetuity with the ARL Commission to fund the management of the entire Development Pathways system, which would be centrally managed by the Commission via the existing State, Regional & District infrastructure. The ARL Commission would continue to oversee all representative fixtures in conjunction with the various international bodies with agreed rep windows in the Premiership schedule, similar to what FIFA has with its international weekends.
2) Rules
A committee to be formed comprising of current & former players, coaches & club administrators to sit down and literally go through the entire rule book, page by page, rule by rule, line by line to determine exactly what rules make sense and don't make sense, which rules are necessary or redundant and what, if any, refinement or tweaking needs to be made to rules currently in place, always with a view to simplifying wherever practical.
3) Labour Management
I have in previous posts given my views on this matter.
But to recap …
a) Establishment of a rookie draft, a far more equitable method of distributing the best young talent around the league.
b) Rookie scale salaries based on draft position for first 3 years in the league.
c) Restricted Free Agency for players until they have served a predetermined period of time in the league.
d) A soft or flex Salary Cap that allows teams to exceed the cap to RETAIN their own free agents, but not to RECRUIT other teams free agents.
e) A Luxury Tax with repeat offender kickers to counter balance the soft cap, with the proceeds to be redistributed to the clubs under the cap.
f) Establish an official trading platform to allow teams to tweak their rosters up till a designated date roughly mid season, eg: June 30.
g) All player salaries & bonus schemes to be published.
h) 40 man rosters.
4) Officiating
a) One central referee to control games instead of two, but with 6 sideline / in goal assistants to be responsible for different areas of the game.
b) No off field officiating at all. The Bunker to be redeployed and even expanded to provide real time, in game statistical data & analysis & video footage and even physiological data to coaching & medical staffs to help with tactical & health decision making in games.
c) Independent medical experts provided by the League to make decisions regarding injuries & HIA's.
5) Expansion
The League should examine expansion within 3 years with a view to expanding by two teams every 5-7 years until the league reaches 24 teams aligned into two 12 team conferences w/ three 4 team divisions in each conference.
Divisions to be aligned as practically as possible along geographic lines to maximise historic rivalry fixtures, eg Eels, Bulldogs, Panthers & Tigers to form the "Metro West Division".
Regular Season to be 20 weeks long with no byes, split into two 10 week segments with the representative window in between.
Post Season to be 4 weeks long, single elimination knock out format with no 2nd chances. The three Division winners plus 3 Wild Cards in each Conference, (total of 6 teams in each Conference) to make the playoffs. The 3 Division winners to secure the top 3 seeds regardless of record, with the top 2 Division winners to get 1st round bye. Two Conference champions to play Superbowl style Grand Final.
Preseason to be more organised, with WCC between NRL & ESL champions, Charity Shield between previous years Grand Finalists, Nines tournament, a "lightning" Country Carnival featuring 50 minute double games in select regional centres, followed by a preseason knockout tournament with the top 8 teams from the Country Carnival qualifying, games played over four 20 minute quarters, the Final to be played in Alice Springs.
6) Representative Football
Rep footy to be played during two windows, mid season featuring Origin & South Pacific Championship and end of season World Cup / Five Nations or Kangaroo & Kiwi tours in alternating years.
Origin to be played over three consecutive Wednesday nights, no weeks in between.
South Pacific Championship to be contested by NZ, Tonga, Samoa, PNG, Fiji & Cook Islands. The winner to play Kangaroos on the last Sunday afternoon of the rep window. Australia & the two South Pacific finalists to qualify for end of season 5 Nations tournament, (if played that year).
A European Championship to be played featuring the home nations, France, Lebanon, Russia & Italy during the same window. England & 2nd best Euro nation to qualify for end of season 5 Nations tournament.
Player payments to be imbursed out of international payment pool, equally by international federation, not individual nations.
I'm gonna take a breath now, if I think of anything else I'll add later.
I spend too much time thinking about the game, plus I’m a data analyst by profession, so I tend to set out my posts as such.
