provide coke and hookers for the crowd to use during the game.
How good was watching all 3 grades? I grew up in Kogarah, directly across the road from Jubilee oval, and I was at most Dragons games cheering for whoever was playing them. The gates opened at 11:45, under 23’s started at 12 noon, reserve grade started at 1:30pm and 1st grade kicked off at 3pm. Not only that, majority of players played for the club they grew up with so the kids you seen at your own junior club usually got graded locally. I played junior league for the Brighton Seagulls and seen many players from their go through the grades at St George. Players like Jason Stevens, Brad Mackay and the Hardy brothers came through the Brighton Seagulls whilst Lance Thompson was in my age but played for Hurstville United. Something I’ll never forget was, whoever won the competition in the St George junior league played the winning team from the Cronulla comp the week after the grand final. My team won the comp from under 7’s to under 13’s. We played the Miranda Magpies every year and every year we got smashed. That side from Miranda had this one really big kid that was unstoppable, he went on to be the 5th youngest player to play 1st grade, Adam Ritson.
This is the most positive and productive thread I've read. I endorse all these suggestions.
Win games, simple!
1- $$ just look at price of tickets to BBL compared to league.
2- different crowd demographics. Being summer means better weather over winter sports such as league. Kids are less likely be excited when freezing cold. Summer also has day light saving in some states and school holidays. That means families might treat kids to night out more so then when in usual routine. It also used as a bribe for kids behave in days leading into game as well while at home.
Once you attract more younger fans and family the whole vibe of crowd changes
Compare BBL which targeted family attendance from start to rugby league games which seem to be attended by lot of drunken groups and idiots. This results in abuse directed to referees and other fans meaning some people are not keen take their kids.
3- BBL is stop start game with lot of breaks between overs and such that allows different environment to be created. I know different stadiums try to play songs or get crowd into game with chants over speakers but it seems forced most of time.
I been BBL and just like league a close game will usually peak with great atmosphere at end of close game. League is the same in last couple minutes if team trying hold on or it extra time league need find reason why crowds more engaged at BBL.
Well said Fake Midg. The BBL is a stop start and tbh it has more stops now than when it started. I went and the amount of times runners are on the field would make Toovey and Alfie Langer look bad.
Football should have more range of deals for food / entry to families. That would be a good start, and good transport options - start with the simple things and do them well. Cheaper food for a start and more affordable. I would not want to be sitting on a bean bag on a cold Saturday evening.....just saying.
Slugg I was at Parra Stadium that day as well and think from memory we even scored the 1st try in that game and it went down hill very badly. I was with my brother who is a 30 yr plus season ticket holder and a massive fan Sea Eagle fan.
That was the era when Fitzgerald thought our Jnrs that that were coming through were going to be the saviour of the club and relive the glory days...........Ppfft he was oh so wrong with that !!
When you look at the Big Bash, it's a good spectacle, but is nowhere near the best the game has to offer in terms of sport. You can see that the likes of Johnson and Khawaja are a few classes above all the others. The NRL in contrast is close to the best the game has to offer for sporting contests. Perhaps what the NRL needs to do is to have more of the pregames as shortened games involving women's and youth teams. Bring the contest in and show where the teams are placed (ie if Parra win this one they move into top 4 etc). Ultimately though, the NRL needs to get more families to the games. That's what BBL does well, and AFL seem to do that as well, at least in Sydney. For that, we need more family packages at a reasonable price point, with incentives to attend the games live (ie free merchandise, meet players, pre-game events outside stadium etc).
ok i get this is not everyones cup of tea but ive been going to sydney fc games this season cos my soccer crazy mate convinced me to come with him and we went to the cove and which is the section where they do chants and sing the whole game non stop in unison its incredible i wish it was as prominent in rugby league i feel like it could draw attraction to the rugby leagues game day experience cos honestly once you have sat in the cove or the RBB you will see how much the atmosphere blows rugby leagues out of the water and i wish it was in the nrl even if it was only for parra
