Is thus doable? I am a big Hoppa fan but I think no one can argue he is worth more $500k ATM. Why not offer Hoppa a contract downgrade to 500k and a three year extension? $2 Mill over 4 years is not too shabby. It is unusual but there is nothing dodgy about it and the NRL would be hard pressed to knock it back.

I was under the impression that Hoppa was on less than $500k per year anyway
$800k according to media reports, Ham. Do you think another club is going to pay him that, Yobz. So he has 4 years guaranteed at $500k. Even a player-manager might like that bird in the hand, Yobz.
What is the current plan he is on? I know it was back ended. But not sure of figures and how long? Is it just a 2 year deal?
just google Hopoate signs with eels and it brings up the old stories before he signed and the alleged contract dollars involved!
I read those reports too and from memory the deal was $1.6 million over 4 years, from 2012-2015 so people assumed that we were paying him $800k in the final 2 years. I'd say that we paid him a fair bit over the first 2 years.
Not sure offering a pay cut would be all that attractive to Hoppa ! Why would he do that when he will likely be in a better bargaining position than he is now by the middle of next season.?
If we are making a serious play for DCE, his money will be needed. One of Hayne or Hoppa would have to go to even make an offer for DCE
IMO, Hoppa brings more than what he brings on the playing field. I see him as one of the few "smart" footballers in our side and he has a work ethic that is unparalleled - as I've said before we have the nucleus of a good team. It's not so much anymore about finding the right players in terms of "talent", it's about finding the way individuals - and from this I'm talking footballing brains, work ethic, professionalism, etc. Hoppa is in the top couple of players in the club on all those counts, and I think he's imperative to us growing as a club and a roster.
