Helmets And Broken Jaws

It is known from NFL, American Football ,experience that helmets provide zero protection to concussion. Is there any evidence that helmets provide protection preventing broken jaws? Even a reduction of, say, 25% would suggest that helmets should be worn.  It would seem that the NFL type helmet would protect, to some extent, a front on hit to the chin. Not so sure about a hit to the side of the jaw as we saw with JT in the West Tiger`s game last week end? I would hate to see helmets worn in Rugby League but broken jaws are anything but pleasant to experience and see.

  • And how long before scumbags start using the helmets as weapons.
Let's not change the game anymore.
I pay good money to see stupid people who get paid a shìtload more than me bash into each other in the game I'm slowly falling out of love with.
  • As long as you are ok with not seeing attacking football again.

Also you may need some body protection because IDG with a helmet could do some damage.

And then you may need some shoulder pads to protect you collarbone when trying to tackle someone with a helmet who ducks into the tackle.

Hangon, there's a game like that already.

Gave you thought of following the NFL Robert. You'd find plenty to complain about there.
  • How long have you been wearing your helmet? I am predicting frontal lobe damage.

  • Your initial premise is wrong, Robert, so we have to wonder about what follows. The NFL did not always have helmets, only introducing them after deaths from skull fractures. But basic physics tells you that a hard shell modulates the force of acceleration from an impact. Now, concussion results from the deceleration the brain undergoes as it bops against the skull on impact. So a helmet can never be concussion proof, because ultimately the brain is decelerating over about a one inch space. But that modulation of impact due to the hard shell is going to create many glancing effects that in turn modulate deceleration rates. It's physics. The issue the NFL faced is that they used to use a pass/fail basis for approving helmets, which made avoiding concussion a matter of luck: were you lucky enough to benefit from a glancing effect just fractional enough to modulate brain deceleration enough to avoid concussion? But since the early 2000's I think, the NFL used a 5-star crash rating similar to automobile testing, and the results there suggest upwards of 50% concussion reduction for the 5 star helmet. Still never concussion proof, unless someone invents a way to have one inch of padding absorb a very large deceleration force. Surround your head in 10 inches of padding and you're probably fine. Pack that into one inch? Doubtful, but where there is innovation there is hope I guess.

How any of that relates to the absurdity of making NRL NFL I don't know. But even NFL folk say that a helmet is your third line of defense after rules and coaching. That means when we let Ryan James escape suspension for breaking Tedesco's jaw, our rules have failed to deter harmful actions. It's easy to change a rule, and much easier to change a rule than figure out how to compress 15 inches of absorptive force into one inch.
  • Is it clown week?
