With the return of the 2020 NRL season edging closer, many clubs are doing everything they can to be fit both physically and mentally for the rigours of 80 minutes of rugby league.

And for the Parramatta Eels, that turned into a 'heated' opposed session over the weekend that saw head coach Brad Arthur step in.

As first reported by The Daily Telegraphthe Eels first side were training against the reserve players who were instructed to 'rip in'.

But Arthur was forced to stop the session in order for the players to cool down.

“They are the sessions as a coach when you say, ‘F---, when do I need to pull this up’?,” he told the Telegraph.

“The biggest thing is knowing when enough is enough and not going too far and putting them at risk of injury.”

Now, two of the clubs star players have come out and given some very different accounts of what took place this past weekend.

Speaking to the media, fullback and skipper Clint Gutherson pinned the blame on front-rower Reagan Campbell-Gillard.

“I just went and picked up the ball from the outfield, and Reg shot out and took my head off," he said.

"It wasn’t anything, the boys stepped in but it wasn’t anything too bad. Brad stepped in and said boys settle it down, but that’s just the way footy goes and we are looking forward to taking that up.

“The big fella, he tried to get a dog shot on me. You take it and laugh about it after."

But it appears that 'King Gutho' was trying to stitch up RCG - until the former Panthers enforcer was quizzed about it moments later.

“Are you really going to listen to that?" he said.

“You could say it was (heated) but that’s just the way the boys have been training. It’s the way we want our reserve grade to put pressure on us, so yeah it did get a bit heated. It’s only friendly and you shake hands once you’re done.

"But I wasn’t involved, it wasn’t me."
