Hayne definite non starter

NSW star Jarryd Hayne failed to travel with the Parramatta side and is a definite non-starter for Saturday’s clash against the Warriors.

Hayne has been given the weekend off following a gruelling Origin series and will report for club duty on Monday.

Friday, Jul 11, Sea Eagles v Tigers, Brookvale Oval, NINE, 7:45pm

Jorge Taufua (ankle) took part in Thursday’s training session. A final decision will be made on Friday depending on how he pulls up. Manly coach Geoff Toovey says he’s “hopeful” Taufua will play. Young gun Clint Gutherson is on standby. Daly Cherry-Evans got through Origin and is expected to play, despite an ongoing knee injury.

UPDATE: 3.15pm: Jorge Taufua (ankle) will play.

Origin stars Robbie Farah and Aaron Woods have been passed fit by the club medical team and will play, with the Tigers to be 1-17. Braith Anasta (bicep) is likely to miss the rest of the season, while Liam Fulton (concussion) announced his immediate retirement on Thursday.

Saturday, Jul 12, Warriors v Eels, Mt Smart Stadium, FOX, 5:30pm (AEST), 7:30pm (local)

The Warriors have no injury concerns, with Ben Matulino (knee) cleared to return.

Parramatta coach Brad Arthur is adamant Jarryd Hayne won’t play. Will Hopoate (shoulder, indefinite) remains sidelined. Expect Ken Sio, who is returning from a shoulder injury, to start on the wing in place of Vai Toutai.

  • The 17 Parra players selected to play v the Warriors must stand up, play and win without Hayne. It is a crucial match for Parra and they must defend by putting their bodies on the line. It's time for Parra to win away from home and without Hayne.

  • If correct, then BA is either obviously very confident that the boys r really up to it or he is content with what the team has accomplished thus far & perhaps is not going to really try & make the semis.

Just rely on karma, if we win then its a plus & if we lose, then so what. There is next week to focus on, a new B&G Easter, the new dawn of a rejuvenated Super Hayne to swoop us into the playoffs.

    • Gee Mick I hope you are wrong about BA being happy with what's been achieved so far and not really trying to get back into the semi's. Yes he has done a fine job to get this side where they are but from where I sit the jobs nowhere near done.
We are so close to the semis that he has to give it his all these next 9 weeks and hopefully break the circle of failures that's typified the other eel sides of the past 4 years. That's why this game is so critical. And IMO Jarryds presence would've made the Warriors game an easier task. Anyhow it is what it is and we just have to accept the coaches decision. I just hope he knows what he is doing in the run in to the finals with player management etc.
  • Seems other players more involved than Hayne in SOO3 are up to it, maybe he can't get out of his appointment at the local pedicure parlour...
  • Hi Frank, I was one of those who opinionated that Hayne should have played however BA has  elected that the team have a go on their own so either he is confident that they r up to it or he doesn't rate the game importantly enough to risk his marque player.

If its the latter, then it would appear that he isn't really chasing a semi spot as a top priority. If its the former, then the boys should go alright.

Only BA can answer that one.

  • Hyne should be playing, unless he is injured its ridiculous that he is not, look at Farrah playing tonight, Farrah had three times the work load of jarryd the other night, look at DCE and Woods backing up no problems, if Hayne is not injured its a disgrace he has missed two important games with no injury and it sends a very bad message to the rest of the team.

    • That's right Snake. What sort of message is this sending the other players?
Are they considered second class citizens by BA?
We want our side playing, bloody bleeding for one another. But if this preferential treatment keeps up I can forsee player disharmony in the not too distant future.
  • I think he should be playing and the 'resting' excuse just sounds lame. As written above - "has been given the weekend off". I don't want to fire up the should he / should he not argument again - we've done that to death in the other blog.

However, he seems to regularly be the exception when it comes to these things. Completely understand not backing up from Origin due to a busted X, a strained Y, a torn Z etc... but needing a rest? Rightly or wrongly, I think this is why he attracts comments referring to him as "Princess" etc. Every year, so many half busted players get back out for their clubs but it seems that many fans are becoming less and less surprised when the 'except Jarryd...' starts rolling out. There always seems to be something up for Jarryd.

Why is BA unique in this approach with Hayne? I say unique as he is the only not suspended / completely busted player not backing up. Does BA have it right and every other coach has it wrong with their Origin players? If one agrees BA is doing the right thing then by that rationale, I would assume they believe that Cheat Bellamy is doing the wrong thing by playing the Big 3 - who all seem to be carrying as many (or more) issues that Jarryd?

2 very different approaches from 2 clubs who sit in essentially an identical spot on the ladder. Time will tell...

  • Joke. He should be playing.
