Gutherson taking hit ups on tackle 5

Did anyone notice this last night? On more than a few sets Gutho took a hit up on tackle 5, he earned a penalty once and I wondered if it's a bit of smart coaching as he almost always gets part way through the line with footwork, then fights to get to his feet in the tackle and can draw a holding down penalty. Just take a look at the next game and see if you notice it too.

  • I did notice it a couple of times and thought wtf.

  • He’s just a heads up footy player

    • Hi Brett, yeah true, but when I watched these plays there was no intent to offload, he ran straight into middle defenders and it appeared to be a very deliberate tactic to do this late in the tackle count when the defense might be most fatigued.

  • I do remember because i screamed at the tv sceen everytime he did.

Our 5th tackle options close to the line weren't great. You like at the 2 x times a grubber was put in they got a try with Lane and a repeat set when Dyl grubbered.

The positive is we're coming 1st (panthers a game in hand) and there is a lot to work on

  • I noticed it, I thought maybe cause his quick play the balls give Moses or D Brown less pressure when they kick.

  • He's good at getting a quick play the ball which gives Moses more time, but ideally, you'd want your fullback onside and chasing the kicks.
I like when Dylan brown takes the line however i absolutely hate it when he takes a hit up on the 5th. He should be there as an additional kicking option.

"When you change coaches you need to expect some players to chase the money elsewhere because there is no relationship with the new coach. Ryles is now building the squad with the players that fit his style. It's nobody's fault, it's just how it goes."

A lot of the best coaches weren't very good players, and a lot of brilliant players aren't good coaches."
