Gould Again

In the Sydney Morning Herald this morning Gus Gould has a page on League called Set Of Six. Item 1 is his concern for Eastern Suburbs being over penalised in matches. He gives some graphic statistics concerning  the refereeing of Eastern Suburbs by Ben Cummings. Easts win 75% of their games when Cummings is not officiating. Easts win about 6% of games when he is officiating! I think Gus was saying that Cummings had the Easts, Storm match the other night which the Storm won. Those statistics are, prima facie, outrageous. But why is it GG raising the matter? Why do not Easts  beat the drum about it? They are the victim so they should lead the charge. One wonders where GG got those statistics? If it was from Easts, and it is a reasonable assumption that it must have been, why is it such a concern about Easts from Gus? I am all in favour that referees should be named and their statistics revealed at least once a week during the football season, and action taken against them when obvious bias is revealed.

  • It's disgraceful how much BS the Storm scum getting away with. They have for 10 years and the refs continue to let them do as they please.  Cummins is a terrible ref, always has been.

  • The Storm were shocking against the Dirty Birds, it was there for all to see in there tackling, there obviously a real problem with these ref's the video ref & the judiciary. I'm still filthy that a player can knee someone in the back followed by an accidental crusher (player are suspended if it wasn't intentional) & nothing. Then go back to round one when our players cops 1/4 a season for a throw. Same teams are at the top because some are NRL favourites & that's a fact!!!
  • He grew up in Wentworthville and hated Parra. Lol I always thought when choosing a team to support, the local team in your area was the most logical reason.
    • Yep slip..he was a prick when I played against him in those days...nothings changed....

  • Frankie, you are 100% correct, and Gould has more agendas than anyone. I also think he enjoys taking the spotlight off his own club, albeit had injuries this year too, but the 5 year plan seems to have gone now...
  • What I don't get is why this isn't considered referee criticism/comment?

He has an employed role with an NRL team. Can't comment about referees let alone criticise if that is the case.

Can someone unpack that for me? Avoiding the simple answer of course that he is employed in the media - which does not give you an exemption, or that he is not commenting on a game the team that employs is in. He is questioning a referees integrity (oxymoron I know).
    • Gus has not signed an NRL binding contract like a coach or player has. As such he has free reign of comment on this stuff.

  • Ah but bet yah if Hayne was playing for the...um was gonna write something bad but won't...for easts then he would be allllllllll lovey dovey, drooling, having his wet dreams over Hayne but hayne is an Eels boy and Gould HATES Parra, remember?

  • Maybe Cummins isn't such a bad guy after all?

    •  Except when he is putting the knife into the Eels!
