  • This oughta be good........

  • My personal view is nothing to do with race and everything to do with I just dont like the guy.

  • What did he actually do? I know he threw an imaginary spear into the crowd but surley players have done worse, seen some birds flipped at fans in the past without so much anger back at them. Is there anything else he did?
    • Well believe it or not there are a lot of Redneck AFL fans too, yep I know that's hard to believe.

You may recall last year as he kicked a goal and ran along the goal line a 13 y.o. Collingwood fan called him "An Ape" to which he took offence and pointed her out to security.  The young girl was evicted.

Debate started about whether it was an overreaction.  Collingwood fans could be described as a combination of the worst features of Wests/Penruf/and old time Soufs fans.  Of course Collingwood fans went into defence mode and did so by attacking Goodes with boo's at every opportunity.  Collingwoods genius Chairman Eddie McGuire on his radio program suggested (as a joke) that Adam was being cast in the next remake of King Kong which went over like a lead balloon and subsequently all hell broke loose.

Adam rightly or wrongly decided to raise profile of racism and of the treatment of Aboriginal people and as an Australian of the Year used this position to speak to his cause including recognition in the constitution, and racism generally.  Many people thought this was inappropriate and decided to boo him at every opportunity.

There are others that believe Adam milks penalties (which he is very good at) and they boo him for that.

I think the majority opposition of fans have no idea and just join in.

It almost as ingrained now as the way fans call "BALL!" or "GIVE HIM 50!" or calling the umpires "WHITE MAGGOTS" (they used to wear white) or importantly how we will welcome Ricky back to Parra later this year.

The next few weeks will be interesting

    • Cheers Phil! Im not entering the debate into who is right or wrong but surley as a professional sportsman he can put the team first, cop the boos and play on. If that was an nrl queenslander they would revel in it. Mason has taken it on his big chin for years, why cant Goodes?
  • Adam Goodes is being booed because he's Adam Goodes. Not because he's black but because he has shown weakness. the crowd know his soft and the will continue to boo.

Adam could have worn it as a badge of honour, if people are prepared to boo him all match to put him off his game then it's granted that they think he's good.

But Now that he has gone and sooked about it and also played the racist card in the media he's nothing but a pussy in my eyes. He will be booed for the rest of his career.

That being said If I saw anyone yelling racist comments at him I'd tell that person to pull their head in. This is Australia! Racism doesn't fly in my eyes and nether does being a pussy.
  • Obviously people are not happy how he handled the 12 year old girls racial slur on him and yes it was racial slur but she's 12 years old and didn't know the implications of what she was saying. The crowds are not booing him because they are bieng racist they are sledging him for the way he handled that incident. Just ask sir Richard Hadley about bieng booed here in oz. He didn't go on about it he just took wickets and stuck it up the crowd. The more they go on about this the longer it will happen. It's like the Mexican wave, just ride it out for a while and it will go away.
    • No daughter of mine would call an aboriginal / African American / person of colour "an Ape". If not the girl, throw the entire family out for shouting a racist slur. Australian sport has largely been free of the very ugly discrimination faced in Europe and parts of the US (bannanas being thrown on the field, whole crowds chanting, etc), and this Goodes saga hints at that type of behavior.

Stop trying to justify why you are boo'ing and shut up - take the high road if in your warped mind you see it that way (note, I am talking to 'the masses', not to FME)

  • Wally Lewis..... booed everywhere but QLD.

    Adam Goodes....booed everywhere but NSW.

  • The main question is, why is he being booed? Unlike DCE, this isn't about a contract, or doing wrong by a club. What has he done to get booed? An Australian of the Year who hasn't done much wrong, do fans boo him because he stands up for himself and the Indigenous community (the 12 year old girl issue)? Sure, some might not like the way he plays etc, but there has to be more to it, there are many fans who dislike Gallen, Thaiday, Hodges etc. But they don't cop the same sort of continual and loud booing that is more than just a small group. These are bigger numbers, it's mind boggling as to why. If he isn't liked for his play, fine, but no-one boos disliked players that loudly/constantly.
