I think the international rules differ from the NRL rules. In the NRL you have to maintain "control" which Hall did not. In international footy a player only has to keep his hand on the ball so you get those fingertip tries. The NRL focus on control because that should determine possession. If you lost control of the ball on halfway then it's a knock-on so the same should apply when scoring a try.
