Gatecrash AFL Match

With the AFL trying to invade the heartland of Rugby League I thought that as we are such a passionate group of Rugby League supporters we should gate crash the GWS' next home game. Simply turn up, we might make a few signs like "This is Our House", "Western Sydney is the home of Rugby League", wear as much NRL gear as possible and try to get some media coverage. So long as we're not rude or abusive we shouldn't get thrown out. Then again if it's the same security as at Parra Stadium we could be in for a long night. Would love to hear your thoughts on what else we could do to gate crash an AFL game.

  • good idea supereel but i think the only sign you will need is FOLAU TO EELS

  • I think you may be right Muttman. I just got sick of how much the AFL kept saying they were taking over Western Sydney.

  • I've had many of these discussions. The reason why so many Union players are professionals outside of Union is because the sport only turned professional in 1995. Players had to have good paying jobs to support themselves. Even the Rugby League players in the 80's were better off because they were at least getting paid something.

The reason for the difference in social fabric is due to the fact League is from a working class background. It was the game for the working class man. Talking with people, particularly Englishman, from overseas, they were very surprised to hear that opposition supporters sit side by side. If that occurred in England in their soccer matches there would be constant brawls because of the nature of the supporters. I've got a mate who immigrated to Australia in 2006 and he was hooked on Rugby League as soon as he landed. Even though he was English and loved his "football" he picked up the game that was most popular in the local area. I love my Rugby League but I've never had the opportunity to play it because my parents didn't want me to. I started playing soccer at the age of 6 but Rugby League was all I ever wanted to do. Many a discussion was held between why I should and shouldn't play League. Even my dad's parents were saying that because he got to play League I should be given the opportunity. Still they said no. Even though I'm still playing soccer my heart is with Rugby League and my coach heavily dislikes it when I ditch training to watch the game. I might be seen as biased when it comes to discussing what's better between Union and League, but ultimately it depends on what the person prefers. If they want to see tries being scored and expansive play they'll watch League. If they want to see penalty goals and field goals all day they'll watch Union.

  • not a bad idea super22, but i wouldnt lower myself to even put one cent in the hands of AFL or soccer for that matter, n wouldnt n couldnt stand spending two hours of my time watching that sort of stuff,... i live in the city, n if i want to see that sort of stuff, id head to oxford st n have coffee for two hours... at least my money wouldnt be going into AFL ....... but i like your sentiments of geeing them up

  • well said Mutt...

  • GWS isn't going crash hot. Looking at their F/A points they've scored 210 points but conceded a huge 529 points in just 4 matches. They don't have a huge supporters base and the majority of supporters out here are bandwagon supporters who will ditch them pretty shortly.

  • I think the AFL trying to capture Western Sydney is like a dog chasing a car. He'll never catch it and even if he does he wouldn't know how to drive it.

  • GWS - The westies' answer to the gay & lesbian Mardi Gras.

"EA, how was Coinakis in Flegg? Do you think he is that good that he could overtake Smith in time as the starter, pushing in 2027, or is Smith the better prospect?"
