In tomorrow's Battle Of the West, Vincent Lombardi almost foreshadowed the Panthers sixty years ago when he said, “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence."
The Panthers seemed to have forgotten they're not perfect. Matty Johns is right, they're playing with a "chip on their shoulders" after missing the grand final last year.
It's worse than David and Goliath. Almost no-one gives us a sliver of a chance.

Bottom Line
The Panthers are chasing perfection. The Eels are chasing themselves. Possibly the ball. Possibly each other. New edges. New combinations. Fans already throwing tomatoes at R&R, Pezet and the front office after only winning two from three on the back foot, barely surviving.
If we’re getting bashed up the middle making 60 more tackles in the first 25 minutes like the last two weeks (down 20–6 vs Bronco, 14–6 vs Dragon), it could be game over early. And if we’re stuck making 400 tackles again like round one, we won’t be chasing the game, we’ll be drowning in it. Fatigue doesn't just make cowards. It's a vicious cycle that kills.
But if Lombardi got one thing right: perfection isn’t attainable. That’s one for the fans too.
To stand a chance, we’ll need every ounce of "Reel Grit" Gus Gould praised us for and Jason Ryles commended. Not just to hold the middle and our edges, but hold our nerve and do something outside our structures. Because structure, even perfected, won't be enough.
The Panthers don’t just beat you. They suffocate you. Slowly. Methodically. Surgically dismantling you before your eyes.
We’ve been in survival mode. It's Order versus Disorder. Perfect Structures versus Barely there. And sometimes, that’s where chaos thrives.

Yep. Look at the difference between between the 2 sides tonight - and what they have done to rectify their poor start to last season. Both teams started 2025 poorly. Penrith have made it a massive priority to not let that happen again.
Panthers had 3 trys scored kinda flukey. Expected to lose any team would have. 2-2 record included playing Storm Broncos Melbourne all away .
We also had legitimate try taken off us with JAC rules offside and he bombed 1 too.
Cant believe with Penrith side as good as they are needed luck to beat us by 30. Our defence is putrid they made it lot harder than it had to be.
Doorey & Hopgood out for season means the Eels are down to seven middles - Paulo, Tuivati, Moretti, Williams, DeBellin, Walker and Guymer - and each week they name six middles.
So their breathing room is basically one player if we consider Teacum Brown, Mataele and Matterson are in Top 30 but have not come close to selection.

I said a loss of 30 would be about par considering how poor how defence has been. I actually expected Penrith to be better than they were. Penrith have started the season on fire and shown how far ahead they are but we gifted field position and soft tries. We need a fullback consultant on positioning in defence urgently.
Of course some questionable calls help Penrith week in week out but even then they should be expected to win most games by 12+.
Papalii playing at the ball on 40/20 attempt outside the 20m was a stupid play gifting field position. The bunker not looking at knock on by Alomit in contest for ball in right side of field before sending it left for a try and the JAC no try call probably should have seen the score even closer.
We have a lot of work to do but we definitely arent a bottom 4 side like some have said. We played the top 3 sides already and over next few weeks will show if 7th or 8th spot is possible.
Positives from game is our attack
Negatives from game would require more room then a blog allows.
Panthers didn't conceed a try against Brisbane and only 1 try each vs roosters and sharks. We scored 4, JAC bombed 1 dropping the ball and the offside call robbed us of intercept try. I paused the screen and it was very marginal offside and something seen on every play yet they pulled up a Parra try for it.
We now know where the Top 4 benchmark is.
Penrith and Melbourne are there. We are an enormous way behind. Almost looking like we're in a different league.
The question must be asked, have we gone forward or backwards from last year. And obviously the season is too early to tell, but we definitely haven't taken a significant step forward.
We have our club administration and finances in order and have for some time now. We've changed our coach and coaching staff. Ryles gets at least another season after this to show he's made of the right stuff, and statistically rookie coaches don't win premierships so he's already up against it.
In the spirit of evolution and not revolution...where have we got left to fix?
The gulf between us and the top tier teams seems to be getting wider not narrower. We are in some of the NRL heartland of Sydney in the western suburbs.
It's sad but I think we all knew this scoreline was coming. We hoped it wasn't. But we knew it was. So did the betting markets. It's beginning to become really not so enjoyable to watch again, and that saddens me.
Need to fix the recruitment, we will have a lot of money next year including Mattos 700k
