Fullback No 1 spine priority

I'll start by saying this isn't an anti-Gutho blog-absolutely love the bloke and his game on Thursday with an injury was incredible.

This is more a review of other club's performances in 2023 and how important the No 1 is to success.

Brisbane-Reece Walsh. Not too much needs to be said. The main reason Qld won origin and showed how good he was again last night winning in a team without Reynolds or Carrigan

Penrith-Dylan Edwards. Penrith found a way without Cleary and Luai playing but take out Edwards and they look a very different team-particularly with their tryline defence

Newcastle: Ponga. Got the experiment at 6 all wrong. 8 wins straight on the back of him at fullback

Souths: Mitchell. Went to pieces when he got injured and he hasn't been interested since returning

Warriors: Nicholls-Klokstad. Johnson gets all the plaudits for Warriors form reversal this year but this guy has been brilliant. Was fullback for raiders when they made the GF

Roosters: Tedesco had been out of form all year. Found it again in Origin 3 and Roosters have been winning games since

Analysis of the bottom placed teams tells a similar story

Dogs: Perham. Not much needs to be said here other than why they kept him there so long

Dragons:Sloan. WIP but defence is and has been very poor

Tigers: Bula. Started well but has found it heavy going week after week in first grade Another WIP.

Finally Gutho-no coincidence we went on a run of winning games when he was playing well. A number of those games were without Brown and we beat Penrith without Moses. Arthur said on Thursday night he has been playing busted for the last 6 weeks nursing a knee injury. The better teams have thrashed us over this period and Warriors put a score on us when he was out for origin

  • I wonder, just thinking out loud here. Could Dylan Brown be our Reece Walsh? Could Dylan, with his speed and great tackling technique be better for us at 1. Having the space to attack from, like Walsh does

Gutho plays well in the halves, I would experiment with Gutho & Brown swapping.

    • 100%

    • I know it was only a quick run in an unfamiliar position the other night , but geez he didn't look very comfortable or natural.  Maybe an off-season could fix that wagon , but it didn't leave me any more convinced  that's a move that'd work.  The thing is though if that experiment worked , we have halves coming through like Sanders and we have Asi , so would Gutherson be a better option than these guys in the halves , or are we just trying to accomadate him because we have to  ? If so that's a massive issue considering we are paying him marquee money .

    • If anything I think Moses could transition better than brown. I think Moses is quicker off the mark and very light on his feet. He's obviously got great hands but would probably have to work on his stamina, but saying that he does seem to move around the field well.

If Sanders was sticking around this could have been a time to move Moses to fullback, gutho to centre and Sanders to half. Sanders would have had great experience around him to ease him into first grade.

    • Yep, it would be good to see brown in more space. He'd go well at fullback if he's got the motor for it

    • Unless there's a Reece Walsh or Papenhuyzen, the King stays at fullback IMO.

We lack serious strike and good defence out wide. If there's no decent centres available, Dyl Brown may be a solution. Extremely hard to handle 1 to 1 and centre may give him that extra room to explode. We just need Asi to step up in no.6. Asi has potential BUT needs to work on his strength, fitness and work on his defence in this long off season.

  • I did want gutho to centre and a young gun like Walsh to full back but gutho is too good .

I think 2 massive fast strong x factor wingers r the go

  • Like it but like gutho Dylan is too good why move him

    • Lockyer was too good to move from fullback, then he became one of the greatest halves to ever play the game.

      • Excellent point

"No it's not his fault we need a clean out.
I think you'll find when any new coach with a new idea takes over a team they'll want to implement there style on a team and there thought process around what they need and what they have may differ.
