French v tupou

I'm really concerned about this match up tomorrow. I rate French but feel he is vulnerable defending on the wing, as most teams have exploited that.I'm hoping that BA switches semi to mark topou, because otherwise the poor kid will be targeted especially in the air.

  • Hopefully taka helps him out then, I hope your right Ron
  • Not too much in this match up tupou doesn't offer much at all and if the eels can prove that the roosters wont break that side of the field (no doubt they will as robinson is clutching at straws) parra will be well on the way to winning the match.

  • In top form Tupou will trouble any opposing winger in the air. But Tupou has not be in top form, and French has shown that what he lacks in height he makes up for in the timing of his leaps. Hopefully French rises to the challenge, shall we say?
    • Agree Prof re Tupou in top or close to top form he can be devastating to any team. The way BA has named the backline though shows that he is aware of the potential issues with the way that he has named the centers. He has shifted Gutherson to left with Taka in his rightful spot on the right side. To me its a bit of a defensive move as having Gutherson & French together caused headaches in defence.

As long as French can tackle Tupou without really trying to take him on in the air there should not be too much a worry with Taka there in support.  In some ways, the work that Semi does in defence needs to be spot on as well, after his show against the sharks, as he did not attack the ball as he usually does.

The key in the game though will likely be in the halves with Robson & Pearce, also JWH vss Mannah

  • Thats the end if this discussion then.

  • They won't play French on Tupou. Semi will mark him
  • I'd be more worried about premature ejaculation.
  • Have you seen French's vertical leap. The kid can jump. I'd lay bets he has the best vertical leap in the NRL. I'm predicting French will be the one scoring try's off bombs over the top of Tupou not the other way round. Rob sons short kicking game is quite good.
  • very true Brett, Tupou's leaps are in general especially when attacking successful based on him leaping all but on the run with momentum on his side, Semi is also pretty good at that also.

  • I agree up to a point, but the point being that the coach & the others in the team are wise enough to see when & if he starts to sink as against continuing to swim. Thankfully, at least I think, that BA does have that ability to watch for such things & if we look at Gutherson as a current example he was at sea on the wing early on, & like many I thought he was the weak link in that position owing to him being caught out of position readily.

BA persisted & he came good even though he was targeted by the opposition, in saying that I do not believe that Gutherson is a winger though, & French may be more successful there.  However, I am not too sure that continuing with Gutho next to French would be a good move, & shifting Gutho to the left against the chickens with Taka alongside French is a sign that BA sees is a potential weakness, & could affect him at this early stage.
