Forward roles

Hi everyone,

I'm relatively new to rugby league so I was wondering if anyone can give me an explanation on the differences in the forward roles (prop, second row, lock etc).

I know that props are used as battering rams, but not sure how they differ to other positions.

Thanks

  • Not much difference in today's game position wise. Depends on their skill set. For eg junior Paulo and fafita although props can also slot into what was traditionally a 2nd row or lock position a lil wide of the ruck. Taumalolo plays all three positions as well. Generally though props are a bigger, heavier and not as quick hence when you need a big hit up of the kick off of the defence has 2-3 guys hitting up you might want a prop to hit it up Last of all most props coz of their size can't go the full 80 where as 2nd row and locks can.
    • Pretty good summary right there
    • Thanks josh. So lock and second rowers have a bit more skill, agileness and are fit enough to play the entire match whilst props are for short burst impact.

    • Yeh pretty much mate but more emphasis that they have different skill set as opposed to more skill.
  • Thanks Brett
