Flanagan set to resume coaching career as Dragons assistantAuthorMichael ChammasChief ReporterTimestampMon 30 Sep 2019, 10:26 AMMichael ChammasShane Flanagan is set to return from his coaching ban as an assistant coach with St George Illawarra.NRL.com understands the Dragons have offered him a job as coach Paul McGregor assistant for next season as part of an overhaul of the club following a disastrous 2019 campaign.Flanagan was deregistered by the NRL at the end of last season and was recently given the green light to return in an assistant capacity for at least the next two seasons.St George Illawarra implemented a review, which was conducted by former Panthers supremo Phil Gould, which highlighted the need for an experienced coach alongside McGregor, who is contracted for the next two seasons but will be under pressure to deliver after the club finished 15th.It is expected Flanagan will accept the role which was filled by Ben Hornby over the past two seasons. The club is yet to make an official statement on Flanagan's imminent arrival.

  • Shattered he didnt come here

  • Instant top 4 side.

  • The bush Coach would never have someone like Flanagan as a assistant coach as Flanno would show him up,  BA likes to hire no name bums who pose no threat to him .

    • The Eels approached Flanagan & even had a meeting about bringing him on board as an assistant, but clearly the Dragons offered the better deal.

      • Lurker you are so full of shit that the whites of your eyes are brown , you just pluck crap out your butt as you go along .

        • Yeah because Flanagan took the better deal offered to him “BA doesn’t hire big names”

          • I don’t understand the thought process in this. Parra had the opportunity to get a premiership winning coach to be a assistant, a premiership coach who has connections to big name players, who once played for parramatta, who could of been the leading candidate for head coach in a few yrs, and decide that Murphy and Kidwell would do a better job? Typical Parramatta!!

            • The assistant needs to be completely on the same page as the head coach. I just can't see Flannagan doing that at any club and he will no doubt have other aspirations. It will be interesting to see how this goes at St George. I suspect it won't end well.

  • We should increase our offer to get him. If Flanagan comes here, the odds of getting Wade Graham get way better

    • Isn't there a cap on how much clubs can spend on coaching setups from next year?
