Explain Why Eels have no money in the Cap?

I find it quite mind boggling that the Eels have no money left in the cap to extend Haynes contract or to purchase other players. So far they have bought Lane, Junior, and a builder from Qld! Norman we know is on a huge amount for doing nothing, as is Moses for doing a tiny bit more but what about the rest? Surely there is still some cash left! We know Brad Arthur is on between 700k to 1Million per year for providing a wooden spoon and getting players who want to play for him but where is the rest of the the money?

Didn't the CEO and other board members state earlier that the Eels were in a good position financially and would be under the cap for 2019? So how come they're now singing another tune! Is there something we are not being told or is someone pocketing some extra cash!

    • I thought this year was his optional year and he’s taken it
      • 2 years + 2 yrs option.

        • He has been here 3 years already, next season will be his fourth.

          • Thanks HKF, had read a couple of times that he had two more years to go. I guess having only one year left and he's taken up the option, it could still happen that he goes elsewhere if he gets a longer contract, I cannot see him being here after 2019 if he plays the same as this season.

Can imagine a fair sum to be freed up end of 2019.

            • Colin I am confused by the situation myself, I also read a few times that it was a 2 year option but also that the option was for 2019. I hope it's only for 2019 because 800k is waaaaay too much for a centre even more so for a centre way past his prime.

              • We're on the same page HKF.  I was concerned when he originally was brought here, though his first year was ok and when he shifted to the right centre to help French in 17 he was ok but he was a shocker this year and an embarrassment.

    • m jennings has one year left on hes huge contract, and was shopped around  , hes brother was resigned by reports

for 2 years, doubt m jennings will be signed by no one on current form on $800,000 ,maybe super league.

  • Years of poor management, salary cap mismanagement, poor recruiting, failing to understand how the cap and TPA's work is why the club is where it is.
  • What does BA’s salary have to do with the salary cap ?

    • That's a good question Brett, perhaps you could give us an answer!.
