Everyone just harden the **** up

I am sick to death of people in the media, coaches, fans, and contributors to this website crying out for penalties and suspensions for contact to the head that is purely accidental. It is football for christs sake! There will inevitably, in most tackles, be contact made to the head. Out of all the players put on report this week, none should be suspended. In most cases the "felled" player was falling into the tackle and in other cases the contact was minimal. When Brent Kite hit Chris Heighington in the nose, it was bloody nothing. Heighington was complaining as soon as he got brushed and low and behold if you play footy you are going to get a bloody nose now and then. He wasn't dazed, he wasn't hurt, he ducked into it, BIG DEAL! But we can't let the mum's of kiddies playing league see bloody noses can we! It must've been a cheap shot. My arse!I'm all for cleaning the game up but when I mean cleaning the game up I mean stamping out the thugs who deliberately attempt cheap shots. None of those tackles on the weekend that were penalised or put on report could be deemed as a cheap shot IMO. Jesus!, that means I'm sticking up for Manly and 'Dogs players! It should never come to that! :) The sad thing is our players are becoming like soccer players in regards to milking penalties but who can blame them. The rubbish decisions regarding high shots gives them little choice. Well I say if we wanna make it like soccer, then bring in the diving rule they have. That could sort a few of these divers out. If these players that continually lay down continue to do so, I'm gunna need a new plasma real soon because more than once on the weekend my remote came close to being hurled at the telly. Come on people, it's Rugby League!!

  • I agree, there are to many players that try for an oscar or golden globe and not play in the spirit of the game.
If they are not man enough they should go and play chess instead
  • A teaspoon of cement i say!! The game is getting softer and softer as the days go on, and referees are having to much interference in the game. Its Rugby leauge so man up, go play for the I ties if your gonna milk penaltys
  • Remember the 70's & 80's! hahah Elbows, forearms and to be penalised it had to be an horrific tackle. These days anything near the head is a problem, but rugby league is a physical sport so it's going too happen.
  • Get your hand off it Nidge.

I agree that a percentage of high shots are accidental and some are just unavoidable, however a majority of high shots just come out of pure laziness by the tackler. Penalties and the risk of suspension are their to keep players on guard and aware that they can't come into tackles being reckless, recklessnes will lead to injuries.

Keiran Forans shot yes it was high but it was unintentional, penalty was sufficient.

Micheal Ennis's shot was just lazy and misjudged, and deserved a week on the sideline which he has got.

Brent Kite landed two high shots on the weekend, the first which busted Heighingtons nose was lazy yet I wouldn't say reckless, however the second one which he fortunately didn't catch as flush was very poor, it was late, his arm was swinging and he wasn't put on report for it.

George Rose's shot was purely out of frustration, swinging arm, clenched fist and the player was almost on the ground before he decided to come in and hit him. If he had of done some serious damage to the tigers player (which was quite possible) then he would of been sitting on the sideline for a lot longer than a week, which I think he should be content with.
  • Well Blue'n'gold we will have to agree to disagree. Regarding laziness, players get tired and they are going to clip their opponents head now and then. My point was that the rules aren't designed to stamp out thugs but ultimately they are frustrating many fans with the penaltyathon we are seeing for so-called high shots. It's comforting to see the majority of replies supported my argument. The refs should be looking for intent more than accident, that's all. If not, let the penalties continue to decide the winner of most games. A crying shame!
    • Fair enough mate. I'll cop that.

Would you agree that what is even more frustrating is the rule where a player is taken out after they have kicked?

Ref's have to blow penalties now every time the kicker is touched which is rubbish, putting pressure on the kicker is part of the game. Fair enough if the shot is late, or overly strong but most of the penalties these days are for little more than a nudge.
      • I strongly agree with you on that. When Jamie Lyon (i think it was him) was brushed by the Tigers player just b4 halftime on Monday night which led to a penalty was tragic! It's all getting a bit too touchy feely with alot of rules.
  • We talk about soccer(football) players milking penalties but this practise goes on each & every week in League yet it NEVER gets picked up.How many times do you see the man playing the ball reel away as if hit by a sledge hammer or roll around the ruck and hold down a player who is trying to get to his feet to mark him in the paly the ball. I must admit I have at least seen it a few times when the ref is soccer has penalised a player for diving and has given hin a yellow card. Why can't the video ref give the on field ref a heads up that the player has milked the penalty. Give the penalty against him, let him cool his heels for 10 mins and see how quickly this practise lasts......Not Long
  • Here here! That is exactly what the game needs if we are going to continue with these current laws. Ray Price would be shaking his head at some of these players lying down. He looked like he'd fallen into a meat grinder at times when he was playing and he would be staggering to his feet still!
