Energy prices WTF

Non Eels blog but wtf

It looks like everyone's Electricity bill will rise by at least 40% from 1st of July this year. I've noticed that mine went up from a flat rate of 29c per klw to something like 40c, they stating that wholesale prices are rising & some bs about extreme weather wtf, and infrastructure upgrades.

I've shopped around on the net yesterday and found prices as cheap as 29c to 33c

The daily charges also went up from 70c to 121c, almost double mother fkrs.

Anyways,  all the best in finding better deals.

It looks like inflation will go through the roof aswell,  as major companies aren't going to absorb these price rises easily.

    • It's a bit confusing you may need to dumb it down a bit for me. But what you're saying is the reason electricity has been going up rapidly, since about the time of Paris and Net Zero, is the power companies ripping us off. But they weren't ripping us off before this? I'm presuming the other Nations around the world where power prices have escalated quickly in a similar time frame are in  a similar scenario.

  • The Sun's energy has been free for millions of years. No inflation issues

    • Yeah but harnessing it isn't.

  • There is a lot of science being currently being done to use the moon as a resource for energy to complement sun energy. In another 20 years technology will move very quickly with providing new cheap energy sources. My daughter sent me something recently which said Toyota has developed advanced new technology for cars which will eliminate battery electric cars. Cars will run on water technology. .

    • Your daughter probably meant hydrogen electrolysis. Water is the vapour product from the combustion of hydrogen. My understanding is 'water powered car' is a confused, downstream version of Toyota's claim they could use water to cool the engine of a hydrogen powered car, by injecting water into the cylinders? Will we have hydrogen cars? Doubtful. Most cite the laws of physics. You have about a 70% efficiency loss to get the hydrogen powering your car, versus a 5% efficiency loss charging your EV battery. It's not clear we need to talk infrastructure problems or even classic 'range anxiety' with EV's if hydrogen efficiency losses are that great?

May as well just go EV all the way. Once we do go EV all the eway, that will also add a huge virtual power plant to the grid as all the EV's sit connected to it. Watch gas as peak power or reserve plummet at that point.

PS: hydrogen might replace gas as heating fuel in homes though

      • I think you are right Daz. Hydrogen science may be at the same stage people doubted computers would take off.Being my age and seeing how things have changed in the last 60 years or so is mind blowing. We will accelerate that progress ion probably by 20 times or so over the next 60 years. I hope for the better. I have watched all the series of the Handmaiden tales except the last one.The last of the series is now on SBS on demand. I am very anxious about watching it .

        • I should have said " However hydrogen science maybe.....

      • I can't see vehicle manufactures wanting their cars to be powering the grid. I don't think I'd want to do it personally, if I ever did buy an EV I would want the battery for driving the next day.

  • Just change providers, they all try to have a gouge after a while.
This is what happens when LNP are in office for the lions-share of the last 30 years.

  • We are experiencing the same cost of living gouging in NZ also.I got sick and tired of it and when we built our new home it was all about giving the middle finger to these power companies and alike. We basically don't get power bills anymore we generate enough power with panels and our house was built to the German highest passive house standard for the most part the house stays between 20-22 degrees 24/7 365 with very and I mean very minimal heating and cooling during the summer.

Even in the heat of the summer 30-35 degrees C we stay 22 degrees inside without any cooling. Our total power bill for the last 3 years has been $200 NZD.

If anyone is looking to build a house I highly recommend passive housing there just so comfortable to live in the air is cleaned on entry and if you have any sought of asthmatic conditions especially kids this type of housing is right up your alley.
