Energy prices WTF

Non Eels blog but wtf

It looks like everyone's Electricity bill will rise by at least 40% from 1st of July this year. I've noticed that mine went up from a flat rate of 29c per klw to something like 40c, they stating that wholesale prices are rising & some bs about extreme weather wtf, and infrastructure upgrades.

I've shopped around on the net yesterday and found prices as cheap as 29c to 33c

The daily charges also went up from 70c to 121c, almost double mother fkrs.

Anyways,  all the best in finding better deals.

It looks like inflation will go through the roof aswell,  as major companies aren't going to absorb these price rises easily.

    • Everything is still going up. Wages aren't keeping up with the cost of living.

  • Net Zero is the most insane policy. That's why our energy is so expensive. It's causing industry to shut down all over the country due to it's costs. Then we just go and buy the manufactured goods from China where they have cheap power and don't give a fuck about emissions. The loss of industry and manufacturing is the oposite of what you want your counrty to do.  The irony being we sell them the coal to make the cheap 'dirty' energy.

Our country goes broke doing something that has no effect on what it sets out to do. All the western nations going down the Net Zero road are having their economies eroded away by doing it and China just gets richer at their expense.

Cheap energy is what has brought vast populations of people around the world out of poverty , there is a direct relationship between the price of energy and the wealth of society. I don't want to hear the arguement renewables are cheaper because when factoring everything in they are not.

Someone on here said 'Global warming is happening", I think you are correct, but we won't be able to do anything about it. Every year the world is producing more emissions and requiring more energy, it's obvious Net Zero is not working and only silly people want to go down with a sinking ship.

Instead we should be spending that money on preparing for a warmer climate, that's inevidable so let's adapt to it rather than pissing in the wind.

    • Very well said.

Unless the entirety of Australia is covered under a bubble, all this brouhaha about being green will not have an impact    in making the environment better.

The only impact it will have is on all of the australians who are having to work and work just to survive.

  • Want the good news or the bad news?

Let's start with the bad news. Network prices exceed network costs. Structurally excessive network prices exist across the national electricity market. Folks need to drink in that fact, because it means that increases in retail costs are more correlated with those network costs than state-by-state generation costs. Also, shopping around won't help you much with those network costs, because the networks are monopolies regulated by the Australian Energy Regulator. More bad news is that with the focus on the 1 July increases, people imagine these costs are some new thing, and they might talk "headwinds" or "inflation" or blame some generation option they saw in the paper the previous day (usually renewables). No, network super-profits have exceeded allowable profit margins for over a decade

Now for the good news. Ha, I lied, there is still more bad news. Peak rates have increased. Even worse, daily supply charges have increased, meaning even those exporting power from their Solar PV are paying a higher fixed charge before they even get to those kWh's they export.

Where should consumers look for why this sh*t is happening?

So now is the good news. Look at your utility. At all the utilities. Learn about how the utilities are gaming the Default Market Offer (DMO). Australian utilities are scamming Australians. The utilities have written the marke rules purely to help themselves. The DMO is supposed to be a price cap protecting vulnerable consumers but both state-owned and private-owned utilities are increasing prices to close the gap with that cap. The utilities are scamming us.

Or another way of saying this is don't join the sheeple, some of whom have come on to this thread, looking for scapegoats in renewables. Ageing coal fired power is expensive and gas fired power is expensive, and it is gas that often sets the price. Having a really disorderly transition where wreckers like the Nationals are basically off-loading stranded asset costs of their fossil fuel backers on to us consumers is not helping. But the problem is not really the generation options though, it is THE UTILITIES.

Anyone remember when Morrison in 2022 pushed out the announcement date of the DMO to post-election, knowing it was gonna be crap, and thus gaming the system to make it look like switching to the ALP in 2022 led to higher prices? Don't fall for that claptrap either. The UTILITIES were busy ripping us off and Morrison just avoided facing up to it by some trickery in announcement dates.

STAY FOCUSED ON THE UTILITIES RIPPING US ALL OFF.

In a sh*tty situation, that is actually my 'good news'! Know where to look for the source of the trouble. Don't be distracted by BS like 'renewables are doing it' or 'but if only we had nuclear reactors'. No, it's over-inflated network costs and the utilities.

One tip is to get off DMO offers if possible. This requires doing some due diligence shopping around, is easier for homeowners than renters, and of course the utilities serve up lots of midirection so it can be tricky. But UTILITIES are bidding up to the DMO, so unless we all demand the UTILITIES stop gorging themselves on super-profits, the whole thing won't change much. Some are doing their best to opt out of the system, via coupling Solar PV with batteries. Do not confuse this with 'off grid' fantasies of any form. What is happening is that consumers with Solar PV + battery can lower their grid demand, thus lowering their exposure to the BS the utilities are doing. Yes they also escape some of the peak rates shenanigans but are still open to the daily rate rip-off, and if we keep letting utilities write the rules, even those with Solar PV + battery will eventually be ripped off just as much as ther rest of us.

So, BLAME THE UTILITIES. They are the ones doing this crap. Every government, state or federal, ALP or LNP, needs to be pressured to rewrite the market rules to stop utilities scamming us. This is especially important because generation costs from renewables are actually very low. Many people are caught up in stupid stuff like denying climate change or not grasping low generation costs from renewables, and contribute to everyone taking their eye of the ball doing the actual damage to our consumer prices: UTILITIES.

    • Stop it with the reason and logic. The cult does not like it.

Also giving no bid contracts to multinationals that bascially steal our sovereign resources only to sell the into the international markets so we are forced to buy them back.

eg. Norway and Australia both have significant gas industries, but Norway generates substantially more revenue from its gas sector and returns a larger share to the public. In 2023, Norway's total revenue from oil and gas was estimated at $327 billion (AUD), with the public receiving 64% of that through taxes and dividends. In contrast, Australia's estimated total revenue was $164 billion (AUD), with the public receiving only $16 billion (9.8%) through taxes and royalties.

This is why they continually raise fees and fines to nickel and dime us while the multinationals rip us off.

    • Hmm sounds like we are having some issues with an Oligarchy blaming the solar panels for the the price rises. Thanks Daz

  • The Sun's energy has been free for millions of years. No inflation issues

  • There is a lot of science being currently being done to use the moon as a resource for energy to complement sun energy. In another 20 years technology will move very quickly with providing new cheap energy sources. My daughter sent me something recently which said Toyota has developed advanced new technology for cars which will eliminate battery electric cars. Cars will run on water technology. .
