End of Suburban Grounds?

CEO of Souths has said that all games should be played at the main Stadiums in each of the major cities. I think that this will get fans offside as personally I love going to Parra Stadium to watch Parra play. Using just 2 stadiums will burn out the grounds and the condition will greatly deteriorate. The suburban grounds make Rugby League what it is.

  • I just read in the SMH that a new proposal is about to be tabled to the Commission. This new proposal wants to keep suburban grounds but wants a marquee game moved to ANZ Stadium. For Parramatta that could mean moving our match against Manly or Penrith to ANZ. As a fan I'd like for the grudge matches to be kept at suburban grounds. It's a lot more intimidating for oppositions to run out and be surrounded by a sea of Blue and Gold rather than a half full ANZ. The ARL Commission has to realize that they will lose fans by moving matches to bigger grounds. There's a certain connection between fans and their suburban grounds. For Parra fans, the stadium has stood for 26 years and before that there was Cumberland Oval. It's a pain in the arse to get to ANZ due to the public transport. It may also see a spike in violence due to one drunk fan having a go at an opposition fan on the train ride. It's not somewhere you want children. What's more important: the money or the fans?
  • I know what you're saying but we would've had 20K fans at the Manly match if we were traveling better. Personally, if we were playing them at ANZ I wouldn't have gone. Purely for the fact it takes over an hr to get there and if we lose I've got to get on a train with a bunch of smug Manly supporters. We've already moved 2 games to ANZ and the crowds aren't much bigger than what we get at Parra. I'll only go if the team's traveling well. If it's at Parra however I'll pretty much go anyway because it's closer and there's a better atmosphere. You can't compare a normal game to a preliminary final. That game was huge and we got that many to the game dye to Parra's winning streak. At the moment you'd be lucky to get 20K go to a game at ANZ.

      • Give her a facelift but moving games to ANZ will dent the atmosphere that is generated by the fans. When Parra stadium is full it's very intimidating for the opposition. When you're at ANZ for regular club matches fans only sit behind the benches and on the opposite side. Very few sit behind the goal posts. At Parra the North and South sides get relatively full and it's great to see guys like Fui and Mannah get pumped up by the crowd when they run back to receive a kick-off. Fui nearly alwasy smiles when he runs towards the South side. At ANZ this will be lost.

  • this year will be my first time seeing The Mighty Blue & Gold play and travelling all that way, I made sure a picked a round where we play at Parra, I don't wanna go to ANZ and see it, I think it's a stupid idea and will probably attract less crowds than anything, just look at the Bulldogs and how they packed Belmore for that trial match, its because the fans love going there!, they don't wanna go and watch it at ANZ or Allianz

  • There is only one answer to this blog and indeed that article that had the back page headline in the telecrap ....

    .

How good is it after a match to wander across to the club and mix it with the players and fellow fans?

    .

IF we didn't have home matches at Parra Stadium do you think these functions would be as well patronised as they have been (and will continue to be).

    .

I am reasonably sure that MOST Rugby league fans in general would not give up their home games at a ground nice and close to home, in a local area or near their leagues club.

    .

    I will say no more

  • would you rather see Parra play at Parra? or at ANZ?

  • Big blockbuster games could be moved to ANZ and promoted as a double header, first game 5pm next at 7:30 etc. That would draw 35K plus fans, it makes sense. I do think its a pain to get to ANZ, so it's about balance, not a total relocation, but a handful of big games.

The game needs to look at the big picture, it's a competitive market and it needs a more professional approach to promotion.

  • It would be if it didn't have those advertising boards blocking the view to the big screen and/or scoreboard.

It seems like a bit of a kick-in-the-face to those who pay decent money to go in and watch a game of footy in the year 2012 when big screens are present at all grounds and, to the best of my knowledge, visible to all.

I'm sure they could be erected so that they do not block the view. How about putting them to the side of the big screen and placing them on top of each other. Kind of layer upon layer upon layer......

  • IMO the Sunday match of the round only should be played at a major stadium such as the SFS, regardless of the sides, even a Storm/Broncos match of the round .
  • You've obviously never had the pleasure of watching league at the old Wembley Stadium, or Knowsley road St Helen's, or even Millennium Stadium in Wales
