Eels seeking medical retirement for Anthony Watmough

Lord Mayor of Parramatta and Eels board member Paul Garrard says it is his understanding Anthony Watmough has agreed to retire as the team attempts to get back under the NRL salary cap.Watmough joined the Eels ahead of the 2015 season, but has not played in 2016 due to an ongoing knee injury.Garrard said the club has prepared a submission to the NRL for Watmough to medically retire, but the code's governing body cancelled a meeting in which the submission was to be put forward.NRL's proposed sanctions on EelsExpand"A dialogue will be created between the NRL [and the club], and it will need to happen smartly, to enable the Anthony Watmough issue and the salary cap issue to be addressed prior to tomorrow week and to get that team on the field," he said. The NRL said the Eels were $570,000 over the salary cap this season and must become cap compliant before they can start earning back any of the competition points they lost due to cap breaches.NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg spoke on Tuesday about what is required to get a retiring player's salary off the books due to injury."The salary cap auditor has to be provided with all the medical certificates and he has to be certain that that's bona fide," he said.http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2016-05-05/anthony-watmough-medical-retirement-parramatta-eels-board-member/7387054

  • Injured Eels veteran Anthony Watmough says he’s ready to hang up his boots for good if it helps get Parramatta under the salary cap.

He’s told Channel Nine he has no hesitation doing the right thing by his club so the boys can play for points.

“The club is bigger than me. If I get the chance to do the right thing and have to do what I have to do for the boys to move forward, it’s a no-brainer for me,” said Watmough, on Channel Nine.

“I’ve had a career where not many thought I would get at. And like I said, my best interests has always been with the club and if it comes to that, it comes to that.

“Parra’s always does the right thing by me, and I have no hesitation in doing the right thing by Parra and letting the boys move forward and play for points.” Listen to the full interview below.

"positives are Loiero is out. That is a big piece of their middle, he does a lot of clean up work in defence, tightens up the attack. No Katoa and they are umming and arring whether to play Ativalu Lasati or Joe Chan on right edge.
