Hannay is a real dark horse, has also had plenty of time under good coaches learning his trade. If Ryles is genuinely interested in coaching parra he'll win the race I think.
Hannay is a good communicator and has a great relationship with the qld based players and knowledge around qld development players which could be an advantage in the club becoming more attractive destination.
I think Hannay could be in the final two candidates.
I think its going to come down to Hannay vs Maguire
Slater is far fetched, but it would hurt the club to ask him about his future as a head coach

Hannay
Might work but is a work in progress, unproven. Too soft, too young?
McGuire
The polar opposite. A truck-swearing, tough-arse
We'd need a Counter balance to his chair throwing. Maybe assistants such as these below.
Don't underestimate the importance of assistants here (one of our Achilles heel in the Arthur era) like guys below.
Assistants
BrianMcDermott
is a great coach (won most SL titles) doing wonders for the Knights 2023-24 as a defensive coach. Making O'Brien look good.
Don't underestimate this former combat serving British Royal Marine pro-boxer, English Test firebrand, with a hunger to succeed in the NRL
This guy is a top notch people person who makes knowing everything about a player his job, and I mean everything to a in-depth understanding, probably more than anyone mentioned so far
He's got more life experience, brain, creativity than the lot of them put together. I'd take a punt on him in a heartbeat
He's no softie, he could knock McGuire to Kingdom Come
He's got more life experience, brain, creativity than the lot of them put together. I'd take a punt on him in a heartbeat
Only problem is his accent not too strong or Cockney or PR but it's still British
HOE, I much prefer the idea of McDermott & also McNamara.
Slater would be number 1 but he is not leaving Melbs.
I know some will say winning an SL comp is not the same thing, but is that really the case in regards to coaching?
For Aus players, sure, it's a step down in quality & they generally stand out.
But does that really help coaches in any way? Unless they have an influx of Aussie players in their side, the coach is effectively coaching lower quality players who are playing lower quality players?
The biggest appeal in a resume for me would be to have someone who has won at the top level, not just reached it, whether thats NRL or SL (along with someone who is known for defensive prowess).
That proof that they have handled the pressure of the biggest stage & get the best out of their players on the biggest stage.
That to me is what this particular roster needs because they know how to make finals (or at least, they used to).
Its that attention to detail & professionalism across an entire season, those non-negotiables that are ingrained in every player from Day 1 of preseason all the way to a GF, so when finals come around a team can fall back on those details, that work ethic, confidence.
Nothing against Hannay or Ryles but cant see either as what the Eels need personally, but, admittedly I have no idea what the Eels need.
Outside of Jauncy, we both know they need him badly.

Nos, tbh, I'd be surprised if we seriously contemplate someone like McDermott as HC or Dr Jauncey despite their calibre & resumes. We haven't even approached him or touched base over the last decade (I asked him directly). Great guy. Humble.
They're just too outside the box. Too out there.
The irony being Bennett and Jauncey are a close team of decades of through all the titles. And plenty of other successful coaches winning titles. Jauncey is everywhere with Wayne. Training paddock. Dressing room. Tunnel. Coaching box sitting next to him.
I'm hoping McDermott gets a shot with an NRL club. He will eventually if he sticks at it. He's doing good things with the Knights defence for now.
Bottom line is: Anyone is a punt.
We'll probably go with Ryles, Wallace, McGuire, Hannay or Wallace. Someone like that. Someone who is widely respected either with some runs on the board or a tauted up and comer. It will appear safer optics.
McElduff looks very conservative and seems to wear the pants in the board. He's seems to have been wearing the pants since 2016-17 when he took over from Donnelly as Chairman. Quite black and white. He was saying the "reason why I did" this or that in the pressor.
Agree, for Jauncy, or someone of similar ilk (Emma Murray is highly regarded & worked closely with the Richmond Tigers), I think we'd need that to be the coach driving it. Can't see that coming from our corporates.
I don't want to write this board off with going for someone outside the norm, HOE. Mainly because its better for my mental health, but also because they really surprised me with letting BA go so I want to give them some credit for that.

Yeah, they played a good hand of smoke and mirrors poker, didn't they? And were ruthless when they wanted.
Can't underestimate or predict them too much.
They had many of us fooled and we're the ones calling them dumb dopes. Kind of comical.
I wouldn't be surprised if that alleged "Eels board pass on Bennett" (May 2nd) was in part cooked by our board. They kept everything else secret.
It was a day after the Board decided to secretly sack Arthur (May 1st) that was a day after Souths sacked JD (April 30th) and said they wanted Bennett.
Reading between the lines it is McElduff making the big calls. Sarantinos is the more sweet talker (despite the plethora of umms and arhhs) who is a bit of a relationship builder doing much of McElduff's bidding. That how it seems to me, but I could be wrong. They're not stupid.
Geez he's doing an explemory job there. Street smart guile. He's almost doing Oprah Winfrey heart to hearts. Quasi realityTV drama. It's almost as if he's loving every moment of it.
Wonder what the board think... He's kind of upstaged them.
I think the board did a good job. I think they have learnt some powerful lessons over the journey. I just hope they cast a wide net and consider all options. My preference would be a winning head coach.
"Dom De Stradis runs great lines and works hard. He is like Briton Nikora. Small built. Under 100kg. He is 21 so older than the above.
Polley is only 17 this year so is SG ball next year unlike the above. He will be a gun.
Jim is a big boy and IMO a…"
"He didnt have the best game. I do not think we can make a judgement between Coinakis and Smith yet. Too early. Coinakis only played his first JF game today."
"EA, how was Coinakis in Flegg? Do you think he is that good that he could overtake Smith in time as the starter, pushing in 2027, or is Smith the better prospect?"

4 of these would be OK.
The others I am not that keen on. As for Ennis...the less said the better.

Hannay
McGuire
Assistants
Brian McDermott
Holbrook
Steve Price
Dr Jauncey
Yeah assistants are very crucial, Madge hopefully has learned a lot from rep squads he's coached where player managing is key.
James Maloney is one i would look at as attacking coach since Payten is on hot seat.

Tell you what's hilarious: Arthur's Promotional "Fighting On" tour. It's classic.
