Id support signing Gardner, but 3 years isn't on. 1 or 2 years maximum. Clubs should reserve signing players for 3 years and above unless they are absolute quality standard, or are exceptional young talent as Iongi is.
3 years is just ridiculous
If premiership winning players become available they are always well worth looking at.
I don't think people realise how important having that type of experience at a club especially a so called development club actually is.
These players have been part of systems that have won the big dance with first hand knowledge of the work required and the commitment to be able to take advantage of that opportunity is priceless.
Why do you think the dogs are doing so well, they bought premiership winners, albeit winners on the up.
They purchased 5/6 premiership winners that turned around the standards of that club , brought an attitude that young blokes can replicate.
NFL clubs chase players with rings no matter the position they play so that winning culture can rub off on his current squad.
Often its not the flashiest of players that turn around the fortunes of a club but the collective effort of hard working players that just do their job no excuses.

The fox & Dylan Walker have won on the biggest stage. We can see what they bring on the field but its the stuff at training that majority dont see.
Elite defenders in the NRL are at 90+ % efficency. Garner is at 89.4% efficiency.
Whilst I agree Bup, and have been saying the same thing for years, we need the leaders . It's great to have the toilers that are used to success , but we are a team that's desperately needing the guys that stand up and drag these guys along with them. Unfortunately Canterbury and to a lesser extent Wests have raided the best of the bunch from Penrith whilst we were holding our dicks thinking we had it all figured out with Moses and Brown.

Thats why it beggars belief we haven't got a number of TPAS sorted to go to market for two marquee players, we've had years to source them there's no real excuse.
Our TPA should be making it impossible to say no to joining the club.
Ill say the same thing I say every year we're only 3/4 signings away from competing for premierships again but you've got to move the needle.
Youve currently got two players of rep quality on the outer with their current clubs in Fifita and Cobbo, both come with attitude problems surrounding them.
It doesn't stop your Bennett's from getting the best out of them and the stigma they carry lessens the amount on the cap you pay.
These players are the type you can get a lot of value out of if your systems are in place.
To me Cobbos a centre and Fifita should be used as a hole runner not a battering ram.
Were not even mentioned in negotiations.

The right coaching staff can get the best out of any player.
The Eels are desperately in need of that circuit breaker signing that has relationships throughout the game that draws other players to the club.
Whether that's an official a coach or ideally a player we need him yesterday.

One of the reasons we may not be able to sign a marquee / rep quality player, and leader to your point Wiz, is the Eels reportedly put a financial cap on positions.
Which, if true, is ridiculous. Bup, that ensures we aren't in the conversation for a Fifita type.
Players aren't software, how can you cap a position, surely you cap on a case by case basis based on that particular player & human.
The Bulldogs didn't cap Crightons offer at the standard centre salary, because they knew they weren't just buying a centre.
Crighton drives professionalism, culture, he oozes leadership, and he makes players around him better players, which increases thier worth. Ciraldo & Druissi have both publicly named Crichton as one of the main drivers behind their rise - whats that worth financially? More than a centre, at least.
Wiz, to your point, maybe the Eels in Moses, Gutho, Brown, Matto, RCG etc have had very good players, but not necessarily those who drive culture, seflessness, team-first mentality in the vital leadership group.
As you both said, its a balance, we need the workers. Those who turn up at 110% & aren't there for a huge pay increase because they aren't in those big financial winning positions.
But you also have to surround those players with talent, and we can't purely rely on juniors there.
I like the Garner play because he's defensively very good & he'll make his centre better, he gives his half more confidence defensively, and he's not slow, he can be where he needs to be in attack to ensure we captilise on opportunities. And he's from a elite system & culture.
But, at some point, we are going to need to be able to purchase a marquee signing also as you said Bup. Which might require paying overs, or using TPA's, or doing something we don't really want to do, but gives this club a far better chance of success - while also helping bring other players to the club.
I can respect the club wanting to remain firm in negotiations for sure, but, we also have to be realistic & mindful of where we stand right now?
Those leaders you speak of Wiz, are there, we likely won't know who they are, but you can guarantee they exist & when the next one becomes available we need to be in that conversation, even if it costs an extra 50k per year.
Next year with no Dylan and with Moses , Smith and Iongi at this stage as our spine, it'd be the cheapest in the NRL despite Mitch getting $1.2 or whatever he's getting a lot of which I'd imagine has already been front loaded.
Weve got plenty of cash to throw around, the budget signings allow us a lot of leeway.
Ive said before I beleive Ryles is advanced in certain player negotiations, who they are or when they sign is a mystery.
We have the dollars to make a significant dint in the player market we just need that catalyst signing .
Were not in a position to not go after some quality damaged goods.
If we're not on the significant improve by 26 with the new clubs entering we could feasibly spend a decade or more in finals wilderness.
Capping positions is a strange one, I understand the premise but if we want success we should hold no position on anything as absolute but evolve wth our needs and go after what we most require often that'll involve intangibles.
I would much rather seesome juniors get a chance than sign an aging average at best player lke this. I would also like to see Williams be moved to an edge. I think though form teh reading the aricle we were only interested for shorter than the three year offer he seems to have received elsewhere so mabye R&R were not completely dumb
The perfect mix is premiership experience and youngsters with talent. We have a bit of each but not enough.
Problem with this recruitment tactic of investing only in jnrs is you develop a player only to see that player bought once they get some exposure. We struggle to compete when it's not a fair fight.
The elephant in the room are TPAs and that's why we have struggled to attract talent and keep the better juniors.
From where I sit, the only way to get ourselves out of this mess is finding fans or investors with deep pockets, until then we will never be a consistent premiership force.
By all means, let's develop the talent, you can find the diamond, but my fear is we always seem to do it for the benefit of other clubs and not ours when it matters most.
he might be ok for 1 year, can cover centre & a edge, but no more then 1 year but, I'd rather promote our juniors. There's some good ones coming thru.
