Been looking at a few you tube clips of the Eels 2001 side! Gee, they were a great side in attack and defence and had some really good players in their side. It was a real shame they didn't finish it with the premeirship! Reckon that was like the fish that got away! Like your just about to reel it in and it breaks away! Shame Brian Smith didn't get a Premiership as he really deserved one.

I don’t think the players recovered .
Because teams were all diving at the feet of defenders to get quick play-the-balls in 2001 they changed the rules and called that a surrender tackle. In 2002 defenders were no longer obliged to get off the attacker straight away and our team was unsuited to the much slower game, just as we were unsuited to it this year.
No different from the 2006 Storm. Dominant minor premiers and lost in the grand final. But they backed up and won it the next year. Loads of TPAs certainly helps.
Very ordinary side that won heaps of games by exploiting the ruck rules. They set point scoring records by diving at the feet of defenders and getting quick play-the-balls, touch footy style. In fact every team scored bulk points in 2001, not just us.
Anyway on paper they were actually pretty shit. They only had four current Origin players (Hindmarsh, Ryan, Vella and Wagon), two former Origin players (Taylor and Buettner) and a handful of future Origin players (Hodgson, Moodie, Lyon, Marsh).
Meanwhile the Knights had the following current Origin players:
Hughes
Gidley
MacDougall
Johns
Kennedy
As well as these former and future Origin players:
O'Davis
Buderus
Simpson
Tahu
Albert
Perry
They were a heaps better side than us, and in that grand final the refs close the ruck loophole and let the Knights hold us down in the ruck in the first half. With no quick play-the-balls and no leadership we shat ourselves and handed the Knights enough ball for a 24 point half time lead.
I don't. An average side that overachieves just gives us false hope. Look at last year.
Obviously if you win the minor premiership you're a good team. When I say they were ordinary I was talking about ordinary for grand final favourites. On paper the Knights were all over us just as they were in the grand final and in round four that year.
