Dylan Brown

He is back and still not signed past next year. Is he going to market or is Parra try to get an idea of his back injury?

He reminds me a lot of Foran - a young Foran before the crash. He and Moses seem to complement each other and Brown has enormaous potential. But how much can we pay for potential for a young half back that is way too young to be the dominant halfback. Warriors have bid overs for a lot of players and not got many. They went overs o Dylan at $600K a year and it still seems like overs now. Should we match that illegal past offer or is it too much. Likely to be a million dollar half at some stage but not now. Early stage and uncertainty over his back, I would have thought $350K is fair value for 2020 and could add $100K for each subsequent year. So if wanted to take a chance on a long term contract then $3m over 5 years is probably OK. But I have a feeling it will be a three year contract.

Anyone have any idea what is happening or what his market value would be?

  • sounds good maybe 400k

  • Unfortunately for the eels the warriors have set the bar at $600k with their rule breaking  offer with which they were hit with a wet lettuce leaf as punishment from the NRL. There is also rumours of Blake Green being linked to a move tothe Broncos for this season which will make the warriors even more desperate.

The one thing in the Eels favour is we can offer him an upgrade for this season and simply refuse to release him if another club offers him more the the 2020 season to seek an early release. I really can't see how we can avoid paying what might be considered overs in this, the early stages of his career, for him. At the end of the day it will only be overs if he doesn't forfill his potential, sometimes you have to take a gamble in sport and for me this is one worth taking.

    • I think that you are on the money HKF. If we want to keep him we will have to pay overs. Time for the recruitment team to make a decision and back their judgment

I am sure they will have a handle on it either way

      • agree we need to just bite the bullet

As I was trying to argue, although $350K may be more appropriate in 2020, an average of $600K per season from 2021 to 2025 is probably not overs if he goes as expected and no significant injuries (back). in 6 years he will probably be earning over $1m anyway and $600K would be unders.

      • If we have to pay it, and more importantly are willing to pay it, then its not overs under the current contracting system. But it is a classic case of why the system needs to be overhauled to prevent teams from throwing the bank at young players who have yet to prove themselves.

        • How could you possibly overhaul the system to prevent adults from earning what they can? If you try and cap their salaries because they're young the best ones will all go to the ESL or different sports.

          • The way around it in my eyes is culture and player welfare.I think we’ve gone a long way to secure Brown by the way we dealt with his injury situation last season. There was no pressure to rush him back which was a good thing.

With the scarcity of good 7s you’ll for the most part pay overs for the good ones in my eyes.

If Dylan Brown forefills his potential we’ll look back at this in a few years and laugh and 600 K for the next 3-4,5 years will look like a bargain.

          • It would involve a radical renegotiation of the CBA, and I have gone over this a thousand times, literally I think.

doesn't sound great - no idea what club he will be at in 5 years. At least it is unscripted so probably nothing decided yet.

    • It's hard to get a good read on the kid, he is either very smart and is playing parra for as much as he can get or he would like to go back home to NZ and only a very good offer from parra will keep him here.

It worries me that he hasn't said "hopefully here at the eels", or " i would like to stay at the here".
