  • Saints want to be able to stock pile the money for next years cap as there isn't anyone on the market they are interested in. If that happens it is just another joke NRL decision. The cap relief is to help with losing a player not stockpile for future years.
Also what happens if charges are dropped mid season. Suddenly the team will be well over the cap or suspended player will have to remain out.
Greenturd was talking up how he would really think the decision through and taking his time, due to how important it was. I wonder if during that time he had thought or drafted plans around these and other issues allowing cap relief will cause

      • Not carry over probably used wrong words.  If they don't replace him they will restructure other contracts front end loading them effectively allowing them to use the money in future years.

        • I think under the new and current agreement with the RLPA the club is forced to spend 95% of the cap in the current year. This would leave the club 5% to front end contracts for the following year.

This is a new arrangement and only came in at the start of this year. I may be incorrect with the percentage but it certainly is not as good for the clubs as it was.

    • You can't carry over unspent cap money.

  • The money should be allowed if the player is found not guilty.only

  • How can they give the Dragons cap relief but also pay him to sit on the sidelines. What happens when the Dragons spend that 600k on another player and then De Belin gets found not guilty for example... then they will be 600k over again??

    cant happen

    • It's highly unlikely the De Belin case will be resolved before the end of the season. His next court appearance isn't until the middle of April. We're not even near a trial date being set.

      • Yes but they will still pay him on full pay and then pay another player to replace him. How is that fair??

        • The salary cap is supposed to ensure clubs all fill their 30 man rosters with the same amount of money and account for things like judiciary suspensions and injuries. It's not meant to provide a mechanism to cover for the suspension of a player for something they've done outside of the game.

This is something JDB has been accused of outside the usual parameters of the NRL competition. I see no issue in allowing a salary cap concession in this case. It's hardly something that can be abused. What are teams going to do, ask their players to get arrested and charged with a serious offence?

          • I agree with you on this one, they do it for injuries so why not if a player is stood down , it's not the clubs fault so why should they be disadvantaged?.
