Do we need at least one big winger?

At this stage, it's looking like our backline is pretty much decided upon for round one.

1. Hayne 2. Sio 3. Tonga 4. Hopoate 5. Morgan 6. Norman 7. Kelly

Maybe Hoppa & Morgan swap positions, until Hoppa gets back into the swings of things. Outside chance that Sando gets the seven over Kelly.

However, what's notable about that backline is we'll be taking two speedy wingers who, while not small, aren't the big battering rams that you tend to see in the modern game.

To me there's no doubt that back five is the best we've got, but I do worry that Sio and Morgan (or even Hoppa if he plays wing) aren't exactly going to be super effective in starting our sets with those strong early hit-ups.

Ironically, almost every other option we have outside of those are big, powerful runners who are a handful to bring down running out of dummy half. Radradra, Toutai, Faraimo and even John Folau are all around the 100+kg.

In my ideal roster, I'd have one of those guys complement the more speedy winger on the other side because I do consider those first couple of dummy half "scoots" as the Carma boys liked to put it, as being of critical importance. However, I can't put any of our big boys in over Sio/Morgan.

What do you think - both short term and long term?

    • I agree mammojo I'd have Radradra as 1 winger with Morgan just in front of Sio and Hunt
  • Im all for big wingers in the modern game, id prefer 2 big wingers who can both contend the high ball and muscle the opposition over the line.

So long term id like 2 big boppers on both wings, short term, we can only go with who we have.

  • Morgan's a good centre but I doubt he'd be good on the wing. He's elusive and quick, but lacks strength and athleticism. I would not be confident in his ability to defuse bombs or make one-on-one try saving tackles. Radradra and Sio would be my choice wingers for Rd 1. Might also consider Toutai depending on how things pan out.

    • Ryan Morgan is not small.

  • I would like to see sio and hunt on the flanks with Morgan and hoppa in the centres. Speed rabbits i love speed rabbits
    • i agree with you hindy i think morgan and hoppa in the centres and i forgot about hunt i think hunt be one wing and other one go to faraimo or  folau

  • I 100% agree we should have one big winger if not two
