The only positive is it's now a contract year for Matto. He'll be doing everything he can for the next contract. He knows it not going to be us
He's a grub of the highest order. Didn't even do enough for Warrington to want to keep him around unless he was bargain basement. Rumour mills saying he refused to consider anything other than Parramatta topping up his salary in full instead of accepting less and backing himself to earn a few more seasons.
As Rusty says , makes you wonder if he's happy to put in next season to try and earn another big contract somewhere. If I'm Ryles the grubs not even getting the opportunity to show anything. Play him in bush league as a prop getting his head knocked off by pissed off meth heads who never got their shot.,
The dudes a fucking cancer. Left every club with a burnt bridge behind him, his best work was on his rig and his tan. Never heard many nice words about him from fan interactions . If I'm the club I'm just letting his contract expire and put it down to another genius move from the great MON. What , 1.3 or 1.4 million down the drain over 25 and 26 ? Throw Hands contract on top of that for this year and next lol.
The best part of a million bucks a season we lose per year . At least 850k of our cap gone . Throw that on top of a player in our top 30 and there's your Tino .
Matto was a panic signing. At the time we were threatened with RCG and Paulo going to Dolphins, leading to us extending them. On top of that Mahoney, Niukore, Kaufusi, Papali'i and Stone left prior to that. Then when the talk of Matto going, fanbase went into meltdown losing another forward, so we jumped at extending (He played Origin in 2022) and overpayed. Had we signed Papali'i in the first place i reckon Matto goes to Dolphins.
Not saying that as an excuse as that is on MON and crew at the time for letting themselves get into that position where Matto was a desperate signing, meaning he could dictate a bit of his deal.
you are spot on LB.... careful the facts will hurt the 'lie boy' Wizard who fecitiously explains how we could afford Tino and yes little wizzy every club will sign 'dunces' it's very rare that you get a newcastle come along and rescue you!
Difference with Ryles if that situation happened i believe is he would have someone in lower grades ready to come in. It is setting up that way now. Paulo may retire after 2026, Tuivaiti and Talagi will be looking at being full-time first graders. De Belin after 2027 might be retired, Jackson Koina, Christopher Petrus and Samuel Polley are looking at breaking into the 17 and Guymer would be well and truly seasoned by then.
I personally think Junior can get a few more years now that he's not "chasing the collision". I can see him moving to the bench full time playing that impact role similar to David Solomono years ago. Junior's best games this year have been when he's bent the line looking for an offload, rather than playing as a halfback. As the saying goes sometimes less is more
LB, you say panic signing, a dn dictate, well that is exactly what occurred previously. What has changed since then besides Ryles?
I say ridiculous; when has Matterson ever torn a game to shreds? Never for me; he did his job in say 2022 and that was it; he left us originally from reggies or the like to go to Easts; then did not last long and then Wests and then us; we were suckers and would have been better off bringing up two / three kids but if i recall BA was never one to bring on many kids in his time.
I doubt any NRL will pick up the cheque for Matterson and he will play reggies; tbh I would sit him out fullstop unless he shows something in 2026; his price will quickly reduce. Play him in reggies at prop.
Well name a panic buy this year? in 2024 we only signed Tuilagi and Harper. in 2023 we signed a bunch of fringe players hoping for them to be Papali'i type in their development. Then we signed Davey and Lussick mid year which were poor signings.
But 2022 exodus was seen for a long time but we did not react to it well and we suffered a bit from it. I reckon if you sit down with MON now he would definately say he would do it differently, particularly focusing on Papali'i and Mahoney more. It was apparent when in late 2022, when Papali'i was going cold on going to Wests, that we actually had the money to keep Papali'i. We regretted not acting faster.
Even before 2022 we were quite astute with our signings and re-signings. Look at us now extending alot of our depth and up and coming players, we are getting in early and extending them quickly.
Cancer ain't contagious. Cattersons carry-ons just might be....amputation is the go.
No surprises with the departures. Dunster was injured a lot, Keir only played first grade with us last year becuase we had a shocking injury toll, Greig fell down the pecking order as did Lussick, Lussick were fourth choice hooker.
