The Aston Bulls have pulled off what is undoubtedly the biggest coup in American rugby league history by signing former Australian test player Daniel Wagon.

The former National Rugby League star is set to join the Bulls for the upcoming 2010 American National Rugby League season.

Wagon is an ex-NRL player with Sydney clubs Parramatta and St George. He has also played for the Queensland State of Origin side.

Wagon is due to arrive in Philadelphia in mid-May to prepare for the AMNRL season, which is scheduled to kick off in June.

He played over 230 NRL games and will be the highest profile rugby league player to join the AMNRL competition in its thirteen year history.

“I am really excited to have another old St George boy join the Bulls! He will certainly add a wealth of experience and ability to the Bulls effort in 2010,” said AMNRL president and Aston CEO David Niu.

“Wags will be the highest profile player to ever play in the AMNRL competition and we look forward to him helping us develop the sport of rugby league in the USA.

"Not only a talented rugby player, but also a champion bloke who will be a huge favorite of US league fans.”

Wagon has most recently been playing in France.

  • i thought he retired to
  • The last I heard of Wags he was playing Group 9 for the Gundagi Tigers!!
  • I wonder what Wagon is being paid? Rugby League is USA will never be huge or even recognised.
  • Probably more than he deserves - never thought he was anything more than a park footballer.

Horo looks like being ten times the footballer if you want to compare a similar type of player.
    • Daniel Wagon never passed the ball, even when a pass meant overlap resulting in a try in the corner. He came across from St George with Kusto and Herron thanks to Brian Smith.

He could already be a legend in the States! lol
    • Justin horo will be the next watmough, cept he wont be hittin sponsers
    • I must say, I do as well. I regularly check the websites and try to keep in touch with it's progress. I'm not sure the game will ever be national in the US... kind of like trying to get a gridiron league going over here... but I do think if they find their niche, it could go well. I hope it does.

My bro-in-law is from New Jersey and he's been living here for about 4 years now and is an absolute League fanatic. He just can't get over how tough these Aussie boys must be. If they market it right over there, it definitely has potential to succeed.
  • At least he always gave 100 %.
    • I agree - you could never fault the blokes commitment, and he served through a few years where we weren't travelling too well. I think park footballer is a bit harsh..
  • :-) I miss Daniel Wagon. Another solid, hardworking Parramatta player who was underappreciated.

Parra_90 - since you keep up with it, please give us regular Wags updates. :-)
