A Quick Look At Our Newest Playmaker - Daejarn Asi

This Monday night against our arch enemies the Canterbury Bulldogs Daejarn Asi makes his Parramatta first grade debut.

Player number 837 has some exciting moves.

It's easy to forget that the young 5/8 has already accumulated 18 first grade games under his belt.

First it was with the Queensland Cowboys in 2020-2021. Then, the New Zealand Warriors in 2022.

Now, just two months shy of his 23rd Birthday the 97 kg youngster will be under enormous pressure to fill the huge shoes of another Kiwi in Dylan Brown.

It will be interesting to see if the youngster plays the entire game at 5/8 or whether coach Brad Arthur switches him into the fullback role, allowing Gutherson to get the ball in his hands more as our Eels attempt to move up the ladder.

Here are some highlights of our newest playmaker.

  • He has a very good kicking game, and looks great when given some space. This year in Reggies he has had some time playing in the fullback role with some MOM type games.

A couple of weeks back against the Knights he made 3 line breaks, 3 try assists and 2 line breaks from fullback, the following week against Wests he scored a try, 2 try assists, 2 line break assists , 1 line break and 1 tackle break. Since Jake Arthur moved to Manly he has switched back into the 5/8 role  where arguably with less time and more defensive traffic aimed him, his attacking numbers have been reduced.

  • He just needs to do his job, nothing fancy....Moses should do the rest.

    • Agreed, he might be playing in the spine for some time depending on Dylans Circumstances for the rest of the year.

  • I don't know what to think about how disrupted our side will be in the absence of Brown.  He is elite level defence and shuts down so much traffic that someone will be picking up the slack .  Make you tackles son , kick if required but play to your strengths .  We need to win to keep momentum building .

    • Thats a good point Paul. I dont think anyone in our lower grade system could come in and be as effective in defence as Dylan.

      This year Asi as

Fullback - made 23 tackles and 11 missed in 6 games

Centre   - made 38 tackles and 04 missed in 3 games

      5/8         - made 57 tackles and 06 missed in 3 games

  • Thanks BE, looking forward to seeing how he goes, good luck to him.

How good is it with JA gone? opens the door for a chance at some genuine quality.

"I would have no issues with Papali'i at 5/8, just do not believe for a second that they have decided that already and are just applying a smokescreen. Not until perhaps the first trial in 2026 will i believe Papali'i is our future 6. Even then…"

"He is similar to Dylan Edwards, though can pass a ball. Penrith i think are seeing him as one that got away."

"I would not say top 5-6 yet, but he shows gimpses, even up to top 3. Give him another pre-season and he flies. Money will be tucked away to extend him."
