Clubs monitoring status of Jake Arthur

Jake Arthur may be under contract at the Manly Sea Eagles until the end of the 2025 season, but teams are reportedly closely monitoring his status at the club.

Signed by the Manly Sea Eagles from the Parramatta Eels midway through last season, he has played six games for the club and was even handed a two-year contract extension in September last year.

However, with the arrival of Luke Brooks and the club placing Jamie Humphreys as the third-choice option in the halves, he has moved down the club's pecking order.

With multiple teams around the league lacking depth in their halves, The Daily Telegraph reports that several NRL clubs are closely monitoring his status at the Manly Sea Eagles.

Still only 21 years old, Arthur has spent the beginning of this season in the NSW Cup but is likely to leave if an NRL opportunity comes up at another club.

Primarily playing in the halves, former NRL premiership winner Luke Lewis stated last year that he could see Arthur potentially moving to the forwards as a ball-playing lock.

"He's got some really good footwork, he's strong, he's tough, he goes looking for the ball, always wants to get heavily involved," Lewis said on The Short Side.

"I do believe Jakob Arthur's body shape though, will turn him into a 13."

"Jake's pretty tall, he's a big boy already. But as he puts some more size on, I think he'll be a really nice ball-playing lock."

  • Luke Lewis is correct but I still have doubts about his overall speed, particularly his lateral movement. Bottom line, he's just too slow.

    • He's best asset is what i believe would make him a great coach, he has tremendous vision and reading of the game. Just his body cannot do what his eyes see.

      • Absolutely agree

  • He's a lot better player now at 21 than when he was ludicrously planted into the top team at the Eels at 18. He was woefully unprepared and for a player who had absolutely no representative experience and was doing nothing at Cup level to be suddenly thrust into the NRL was comical.

The resultant boos that he received were for his father and not for Jake.

The very fact that he came out of it with his head above water is a great testimony to Jake and his resilience.

He's a great kid, will make a decent lock but under no circumstances do we want him back here whilst his father is in charge.

  • I'd take him now to play 7

    • I wouldn't. Sure he can plug a gap but his win record in NRL is terrible both here and at Manly. Asi is miles and miles in front of him.

      • Jake is all heart but there is a reason that he's third in line at Manly. Contrary to all his father's dreams for him being the next Andrew Johns, he'll probably end up in the Super League.

Asi is a much better player.

      • I don't think we need Jake full stop, although for a back up half he would suit a game plan. We don't need him whilst we have these kids coming through.

i don't think he will make a pig, as you say he has to put speed on to go anywhere in this game, wouldn't be surprised to see him as a great coach one day. He has already achieved more than his dad as a player and he reads the game well.

Asi is not miles ahead of anyone, his defence will always crack! Jake is a much more honest player. You will know what you get and the effort will be there......never know with Asi.

        • Nice post Poppa. I think many are harsh on Asi, but you are right and has been a knock on Asi in the past, particularly at North Queensland. He can come across as not committed or lazy. His attitude can be one of not willing to put the extra effort in. JA would do what he can do get the job done, the work ethic has been passed onto him and Matt from Brad himself.

Talagi though it seems is in the same mold of JA, willing to put body on the line and do what is asked of him.

        • Agreed Poppa
