Charlie Guymer

What does everyone think of the news Charlie has extended with us ?

To me there is a huge emphasis on athletic edges at the moment with the way the game has gone . There needs to be some sort of athletic edge . Whether they be big, fast, tall , mobile , good footwork.. they need something . Watching Charlie stand to defend short kick offs and not be able to move his feet 3cm off the ground , watching jock madden burn him for speed and Charlie plod along ..to me he just doesn't have the athletic ability of a modern edge. We've given him some time as an undersized middle where he struggles in contact too. Strange re signing for mine I have no idea what the future plans are for him and I recognise he's been thrown in some tough positions last couple of weeks but they're even tougher because he lacks athleticism and versatility.

  • Just average player from what I've seen. Eels definitely need some young athletic, fit tough players. The current squad is bog average as is Ryles

  • In my opinion Guymer had to sign a reserve grade/18th or 19th man contract.  A player with some potential but primarily a back up. I said mid 300s earlier,  but if he's on anything above 250k, id be very surprised.    He wouldn't have had clubs knocking on his door.

The problem is, our r and r probably think he's a future origin star. That's how much confidence i have in them

  • He's a middle or a 13. An edge/center during an injury crisis, can be a goer there.

    I rate him. Only 21.

  • Guymer is not a future edge. His spot is at Lock. I have no issues with the signing as you need to fill out your 30. Not saying you SP, but a lot of people complain when we fill out our 30 with some ok players, maybe average ones and they complain. What do you want? Nathan Cleary at 7, Moses at 6 and Dearden as the back-up?

They are back-ups for a reason and better off filling the gaps with players that can do a job well than RM players who are being called up who were not given a proper pre-season with no intent on even getting near Cup. Your Jake Tago's, Dan Keir's and Lorenzo Mulitalo's of the like. You need players who are somewhat capable, i feel Guymer is fine, to be in your squad. Guymer's role at the moment is depth and on the border of the 19 if he develops further. Nothing wrong with that.

It is not a strange re-signing at all, rather someone we know can do a job and knows the playes around him and the club.

    • I agree with the complaining about players filling out the squad I'm just not sure what Charlie has that makes him an NRL player . I haven't seen leg speed from him , haven't seen an ability to ball play with any tempo , he doesn't fold blokes as an undersized middle ... I may end up wrong on this one but he seems like the sort of bloke we've just re-signed for the sake of saying he's from our pathways. All these young guys coming through now can cover so much of the field . They move well.. guys like young Clarke from Melbourne who is much bigger than Charlie just moves so well . If Penrith make a break they have young forwards pushing up on to the ball not to mention how much it helps their scramble defence . It concerns me a bit we have a 21 year old who played centre in his younger days and he is just so far off the pace mobility wise and athletically . He plods around the field. You do need players to fill out your squad but you also need them to be able to do a job when they're called upon and we are going to need to start recruiting athleticism. Same applies to our outside backs.

      • Well it hasn't been til this year really where where he was playing Cup as a middle. Before that he came into open age footy as an edge and that spot doesn't suit him.

I am not ready to give up on Guymer being a decent to good NRL player. He is 22 this year. Now by the end of his deal in 2028 i am happy to come back and say yeah didn't work out but there are good qualities in Guymer's game. See i disagree as i feel Guymer does a job.

Now if we somehow get a middle next year and extend Paulo, Guymer is in Cup. That is up to him to get back into NRL via the bench at least. But if needed we can put him on the bench and he will do a job.

    • Therein lies our problem. The majority of our FG squad are back up players at other clubs. In fact, a lot were actually that before coming to us, even Iongi.

Iongi = back up at Penrith. Simmonson = back up Canberra. Pezet = back up at Melb. Hopgood = back up at Penrith. Doorey, Kautoga, Samrani and Papalii = back up at Canterbury.  Tuilagi = back up at Manly. TDS = back up at Wests.

Of those, only Iongi and Hopgood make the run on sides at most clubs. I think Brisbane would now not be overly excited to have Pezet join next year.

Add to those our own home grown back up players plus those unwanted by other clubs and we appear to be a project team.

This year's recruitment is on par with 2011.

  • He's better than morretti

    • Moretti has fallen off a cliff. Is he injured? What happened to that fast legged bloke that ran kamikaze lines?

Start with goal kicking! Last year we had Moses and Lomax followed by Russell.Yesterday it was down to Moses, TDS's one effort was OK.Well when you look where we scored, 3 kicks were from the extreme outside. Kicking a goal was the difference, but…

It’s well overdue that the club hears directly from its members and fans. For too long, we’ve had a Head of Football who has mismanaged contracts, missed key recruitment targets, allowed homegrown talent to walk, and overseen player acquisitions…
