Canterbury Big 4 vs 2016 Recruits

For the older fans (like me) how do you rank the 1996 Canterbury Big 4 representative signings of Jim Dymock (age 24); Jason Smith (aged 24); Jarrod McCracken (aged 26) and Dean Pay (aged 27) against

new 2016 representative signings Kieran Foran (aged 25); Michael Jennings (aged 27); Beau Scott (aged 31) and Michael Gordon (aged 32)?

I personally think the Canterbury Big 4 were collectively a stronger group then our new recruits and in their absolute prime when signed.

What do you think?

  • I think we should stop comparing to sides/signings of the past and rather focus towards the future. What do the "Canterbury 4" think of our new recruits?

  • The Canterbury 4 was a massive resurrection from the dead. 1995 was 2nd last and by 1997 finals footy. Although, what is about to unfold could be even bigger.
    • I agree, the Super League mess ended up being a blessing for us and I don't think it will ever be matched again and the four were elite players in their peek.

  • We've bought the worlds best 5/8 , enough said.
  • We had a much better coach back then . There is still huge doubts over brads ability if u ask me
    • Fozza is good looking that's a substantial difference lol
  • Nope I think this 4 is better as the last bunch were all just tough players

None of them were really creative or fast or could kick goals.

As a group this is a great mix with Rep Skills and premierships in 3 of them. Gordon is  an ex rep player with plenty to offer from fullback

  • The thing about the Canterbury 4 was they were all forwards (although Smith and even Dymock played some 6 for us). As we all know we never ended up getting that premiership quality half and the rest is history. This time all our recruits are from differing positions and we have bought a great half. I'm going with this recruitment being our best ever
    • McCracken was an international centre until his knee started to give way and then he moved into the secondrow and became a fast powerful feared secondrower (think of Manu Ma'u with size and pace).  I think the ages of the Big Canterbury 4 speaks for itself as they were in their prime.  Both Scott and Gordon are past their prime but still will be competitive players.

    • Yeah crackers played some centre but he was always going to end up in the forwards. He was slower than a 34 year old meninga in a grand final as I recall!!
