Can you forecast how the game will evolve?

There are so many variables when it comes to creating a genuine premiership window, whether its rule changes like wrestling in the tackle or 1 on 1 strip, reduced interchange or the evolution of players physical capabilities or players becoming multifaceted or role change -

* back rowers were tackling machines, now they run on the edge and play like extra centres.

* locks are like a 3rd prop rather than 2nd phase and offload merchants.

* fullbacks like a 3rd half, not just support players but putting players into gaps.

* wingers were once purely finishers on the end of wonderful backline movement, most are now hit up merchants trying to ensure momentum is gained early on with the ball.

Is it possible to forecast how the game may evolve in the next 5 - 10 years and begin selective recruitment plan to take advantage of developments within the game, particularly give how long it can take to regenerate or turn over a list?

im far from the sharpest rugby league mind but i wonder how after sths or easts can fall so quickly in the last couple of years given the personal they both still have.

  • It's almost difficult impossible to forecast this because a lot of it depends on the rule changes. A lot of the changes in the game have come down to the physical physiques of the athletes just being bigger and larger and faster. Techniques get better, defences are better drilled, and so a lot of the changes are about attacks having to become more sophisticated in order to score points. The NRL has made a point that they recognise that the game is just getting bigger and bigger and have taken steps to address that with the interchange rules.

I think the next evolution will be in terms of skills. Most Rugby League teams have a couple of skillful, creative players and you almost build a team of athletic robots around those players, who each tend to play a pretty pre-determined role. I think 5 to 10 years every NRL player will be expected to also kick and pass like a half. Imagine a backline where pretty much every player is a Jarryd Hayne. I think your already seeing that with big props who can pass. What that is going to mean is attacks are going to ask a lot more questions of defences, and I think the players your going to want are those with good footy heads who can read/feel the play and make good decisions.
