AFL is a sport which requires supreme levels of physical fitness and has extremely talented players within its ranks.
Have you ever watched a game of AFL? I think you make yourself look like an utter twit if you can't recognise the talent of players like Adam Goodes, Micky O, Kieren Jack, Brett Kirk and Ben Cousins. (Sorry to mention so many Swans... but it's the only team I watch.
AFL requires a completely different skill set to Rugby League - and while you might find it boring, some of us on this forum actually do enjoy it. To say that it is skill-less shows a lack of understanding of the game and really a lack of respect for its most talented players.
In response to your post - it will of course be interesting to see how Falou does in AFL - but the benefit of him signing comes from something the AFL knows how to do very well... and that is build from the grass roots level.
Rugby league is the sport of the West. The AFL knows this. To even have a chance at making a dent in the West, AFL knows it has to market its game beautifully - and what better way to do that than with a superstar like Folau.
I work at a school - the boys play Rugby. Most of them love the Eels. Do you know who their favourite player is? Jarryd Hayne and they all have the boots to prove it. At that young age, kids are very impressionable and look to heroes - heroes like Hindmarsh and Jarryd. To have snared Folau, gives the kids of the west someone to look up to and encourages them to get involved with the game at a young age and thus shift away from Rugby League.
Finally - in regard to RL snaring an AFL player - we don't even have the money to stop our own stars from moving away from the game and you want to lure others from other codes? I think we should stick to finding a more effective salary cap, so that Jarryd isn't the next to go!
And as I mentioned to you before - having Karmichael and Israel play for the new GWS team is more about how well they will play the game, it is more about the kids and having men in the sport they recognise and can idolise.
And as to whether people are upset by this - they damn well are upset about this. Have a read of the comments of Brendan Fevola in the paper - there is huge disparity in the contract situations of AFL players. This is looking like it will have much deeper repercussions.
But the bottom line is, is that there are people with deep pockets who want this GWS team to succeed, as well as the concessions they are receiving from the AFL itself.
the only thing that gayfl
is better then league at is there channel 9
footie show.. Sam Newman is a legend ..
There show is better structred and fatty is just a boring twit ...

Remind u of a sport??
on to*
AFL need something totally out of the box to ignite interest in the sport in Sydney's West. They have bucketloads of money to spend/waste. That being the case, they signed Folau. Simple.
Answer this question truthfully - Will you be watching the GWS AFL side play their innaugural match when they join the AFL comp in 2012 to see how Israel goes??? I will. I'll be inetrested to see how he handles it. And this is exactly the sort of curiosity that the AFL wants to generate among league fans to help give the Greater Western Sydney side a leg up in the marketing area.
Don't get me wrong, my interest in the GWS side and Israel Folau will probably nodesive to ZERO after 2 or 3 weeks of seeing him play, but the AFL will be hoping that out of say every 100 young league fans that watch him go around initially, 10 might start watching it/playing it for good. That would be a massive result for the AFL.
As for the money they have spent getting Folau, they've probably already made it back in media exposure and potential sponsors wanting to get aboard now that they've announced his signing.
Sounds pretty hard to me. All the more reason why Hunt and Folau will fail.
I expect that what the respective franchise will try to do is use Folau as a full-forward to employ his good leaping skills - but at full forward you're expect to kick at least 75% - 80% of your set shots for goal so he'd better learn the banana kick, the torpedo and the drop punt pretty quick smart. Plus the Sherrin ball is lighter than a league or union ball and thus is more prone to being 'blown' off course by strong winds. The AFL players know this and compensate for it. That 'sense' would take several years to develop.
As for Hunt, they'll use him at fullback - basically using his physicality to spoil the opposition forwards.
Are they worth what the AFL have paid?? Fuck no! Andrew Demetriou took the extraordinary step yesterday to email each player, coach and CEO in the AFL to advise that Folau's playing salary is commensurate with a standard AFL player's salary. It's the additional marketing and development contracts that blow him out to the reported $1.5m per year.
Talk about being brought down by the weight of your own balls!! Would anyone in AFL buy that bullshit?? Despite being an Islander, Folau has played all his professional football in Melbourne, Brisbane or in a Maroon jersey. The people of Western Sydney don't give a shit about Folau. Furthermore, as it's been said, the AFL boys do run marathons during their 120min games. Without wishing to racially stereotype, Islanders tend to be more burst athletes than endurance athletes. That's why Folau will be at full forward where he won't have to do as much work. So we've got a bloke who'll be basically doing bugger all on the field due to fitness trying to tell the young kids of Western Sydney who share his body type to play AFL rather than Union or League??
Give me a break. No wonder several AFL people are up in arms.
