Brian Smith Is A Genius

The real credit for the Eels loss on Saturday should go to Brian Smith. Master tactician with a game plan that not only exploited our weaknesses but has now given the opposition a blueprint to beat us.

Brian Smith exploited Jarryd's poor positional play. He also exploited the slowness within our team and in particular, our backs. He targeted our vulnerable defence by utilising long passes to stretch our defensive line.

Fingers crossed future opposition cannot execute this blueprint as well as the Roosters.

What really bugs me is the slowness in which we execute our plays, the play the ball and the overall speed of the team. Further, why don't we run into holes or run angles when in attack and finally....what is Luke Burt offering the team?

    • He's a genius with an empty trophy cabinet!
  • Managed to shake the great man's hand after the game. I was one of those tragics who used to email him when he was at the helm of our club.

Thanked him for turning our joint around and congratulated him on an outstanding performance.
  • Yep Smith is a genius!
  • The Roosters were outstanding - well coached, well drilled and played with a lot of flair and discipline in equal measures. If they keep up this level of play and remain injury free, they will have a very good chance at winning this years premiership.

Nothing less than they deserve either. It was an excellent performace to watch (shame it was against the eels).
  • Can you expand on this 1Eyed Eel?

I truly believe this loss is going to hurt us in future games.

Further, sadly I cannot make it to home games so I can only make my comments based on TV. So my question is........... Is there much speed in this team?.....They look slow to me compared to others.
    • Speed is not the issue. In fact, I've noticed that our forwards' play-the-balls are as quick as any in the comp. Our problem, which you quite rightly point out, is our inability to deal with a fast spread from one side of the field to the other. Our defence slides well when the opposition move across the field from player to player, but when the likes of Pearce, Carney and Anasta are cutting out two and three players in each pass, the spread is too hot for our outside backs to handle.

Their first try was due to a defensive error from Robson - which is a rarity. Brought about by a quick spread from Carney to Minichello to the tryscore Aubusson.

The loss will hurt us in two ways, firstly, on 'for-and-against' and secondly it might derail the confident momentum we had been building. Another tough game this weekend so I guess time will tell.
  • Luke Burt offers a lot to our team - he is one of, if not the best goal kickers in the comp. Has been for years. 2 from 2 last week, 6 from 6 the week before - he gets in there and when he gets a chance he usually does well. Leave him alone - so sick of people bagging him out. If you think he is so bad, get out there yourself and do a better job, go on. Same goes for all the other players getting bagged all the time. Leave Hayne alone and let him do his thing and stop putting so much pressure on them all. If you all think they are SO BAD, get out there and do better your self - bet you could not even come close........
This is an Eels SUPPORTERS website, if your not going to support your team, then PISS OFF!!
    • Parra Fan, whilst I totally agree that the bagging of Burt amongst others is short-sighted and pathetic, it is not a counter argument to tell others to 'go out there and do better themselves'.

These blokes play in the NRL because they are highly gifted, physical athletes. Very few people are able to perform as they do. As with any profession or occupation, if your not performing, questions will inevitably be asked. It remains the purview of supporters to question their team from time to time, however, I agree that some of the criticisms are pretty lame.
    • Wayne Bennett hasn't ever gone to a club that were spooner contenders and turned the club around. When he does I will have a lot more respect for him. Smith has done it at the Dragons, Eels, Knights and now the Roosters. Plus Bennett had the luxury of having only one team the Brisbane for years and players that want to stay at the joint because they get "Homesick".
    • Plus it will be great for him to finally have decent halves to work with.
