UNDER-SIEGE NRL independent commission chairman John Grant has finally agreed to quit, ending months of speculation about his future.
In a move that will help end the turmoil and combat with the 16 clubs and the RLPA over future funding, Grant will stand down after five years in February.
The NRL has released the following press statement.
“Australian Rugby League Chairman John Grant today announced he will not stand for reappointment
as a Commissioner at the end of his current term in February 2018.
Mr Grant was appointed as the inaugural Chairman of the Commission in February 2012 and will
have completed his second term when he steps down.
“For some weeks I have deliberated on the changing face of the Commission post constitutional
reform should that occur this year and the need for a succession plan for the role of Chairman,” Mr
Grant said.
“All well run organisations need time to properly plan for the future and my decision, at this time,
assists this.
“In the months between now and February there is a lot to be done and I look forward to continuing
to lead the game as Chairman and applying all my energy to deal with the many opportunities and challenges that are before us.”

Pity he can't take Grenturd with him
This is great news. He has been a total failure in the role and is only there as a result of a compromise with the QRL to vote in favour of forming the Independent Commission at the start. Qld were holding out and they needed the Qld vote to get the Independent commission up and running.
Given the constitutional change that is about to occur within the commission to include 2 independent commissioners from the NRL clubs there is no way that he would get another term. The NRL clubs want Peter Valandys as chairman and given what he has done for Thoroughbred racing in NSW he would be ideal
The 2 biggest issues at the moment is that he and TG have failed to reach agreement with the players association and the NRL clubs on the salary cap for next year. This should have been sorted prior to the preseason in 2017.
The other major issue is that despite the last 2 massive TV deals all of the money has gone and they are saying that they will need to get a $20 Mill bank loan to continue operating when the next salary cap is introduced. They have major cash flow issues and there seems to be no answer for the lost funds
Boy this money situation sounds dodgy as. Be interesting to see where it all leads.
Greenburg is worse IMO
Prior to TG appointment I seem to remember that Valandys name was also being thrown around for the CEO position. He has since signed a new contract in his current position and still has 3 years to run.
While it would be great for the NRL, not good news for eels if it happens, he would likely be the person most removed from any club factions, even though with the eels he would be seen as being at arms length to a point and that's what is needed for the game.
That would also leave the eels in a dilemma in the need to recruit a decent replacement.
Agree Col, and if Politis wants Gurr (see FF comment), rest assured its for his gain and not the NRL's. Isn't Raelene free now..? she is ex-canterbury and could run the game.
Mitchy, no thanks to Raelene. Nothing against her or the feminnie side of things, just not too sure she's the right person for the job.
Agreed, and i was being facetious....I would prefer the lady from You have talent (UK).....
Agreed. two or three years down the track it would not hurt so much but now while we are going thru the rebuilding phase it would hurt the Eels if it were to happen. We have had too many changes of CEO already in recent times.
