"He signed with the Broncos first mate. But he couldn't start until Reynolds left (2027) so we picked him up for 2026. Otherwise he would have to stay in Melbourne. Everyone wins, except the Storm."

French's speed is definitely an asset. It's the other aspects of his game that are a concern. He gets ragdolled over the sideline way too often, so putting him on the wing feels like a liability. He had chances at fullback and never shone their either. If we had a rock solid spine or dominating forwards we could continue to hold onto Bev with the hope that he can sort out his deficiencies, but in our current team we need big strong wingers who can cart the ball back up the field and Bev is not that.
I think if Bev can't morph into a rock solid FB then we don't have a need for him. And last we saw him at FB, he had a long way to go. Potential isn't always fulfilled, Bev may be one of those cases.
Bev is the same size as Slater so it isn't a size thing, it's a talent realisation thing.
Cap, he is still young and relatively inexperienced, and for me I'm not ready to give him the punt yet. With some stronger backs around him next year (hopefully) and another full orf season he should be in better condition. To me its one of the big issues with most young players when they come to grade, they have a few top games and too much is then expected of them.
Bev showed last year his qualities and I don't believe he has lost them, was out for a time injured this year as well IIRC, so that's perhaps also still on his mind. Early days yet, and blowed if I want to see him playing elsewhere and then against us, speed is a big asset and something he has enough of.
With a bigger, more powerful forward pack next season, this will aid Bevans development, and if our spine finally gains a composed general with proper mentorship from someone like a Brad Fittler, and with the past two seasons of experience to draw on, Bevan can only get better. He will learn how to minimise being ragdolled over the sideline or ingoal as much as possible. I still feel the best is yet to come with Bevan, maybe next season in the new Coliseum will we see a better version of Bevan French appear.
