Bevan french

The lastest signing article re mid season signing of Gordon mentions French as our long term prospect. What I want to know is why are young talent wrapped in cotton wool these days??? Hayne debuted at 18, izzy, inglis all the superstars came to grade early, way back to even the days of Freddy coming through.I think we are hurting the long term careers of these kids playing them in u20s rather than blooding them early. Give him the remainder of the season to get used to the rigors of NrL and we are better for it next season plus anything is an improvement on our current selections.

  • Perhaps because the coaches don't think he's ready for first grade yet??

Don't forget Hayne, Folau and Inglis were big boys at 18 when they debuted.  French may not be physically ready for NRL. If he does get fast tracked and either gets injured or struggles with the standard, there is the potential to knock the confidence out of the kid.

I've only seen highlights of French - and he does look good - but you and I don't get to see him at training each day. If he's as good as we think he is, he won't be going anywhere.  In the meantime, when it comes to juniors, I would always defer to the wisdom of the coaching staff.

    • Yep and as good as he is currently there's still a few things that he can work on before playing first grade. It'll take time with Bevan but I can see him developing into a decent first grade player, he looked better this week with a proper half in Troy Dargan. Just because he isn't playing first grade now doesn't mean he can't be our long-term option for the fullback position.

    • French is highly rated, but as you say, he's probably on the small side. Hayne, Folau and Inglis were freaks of nature. I mean Hayne and Inglis at their heaviest were the same size as back-rowers with speed to burn. Bit rough to ask why hasn't French debuted and compare him to a guy like Hayne who was a physical freak.

    •  I went down and watched the U20`s on Sunday particularly to run an eye over Bevan French because people were suggesting, on this site, that he could play 1st grade full back. Well, I did that and was unimpressed. His size is a worry as others have pointed out. In fact, I now worry that he is too small for U20`s. I am mindful of his youth and that he is probably yet to fully develop to his mature size--let him develop and let him develop in U20`s. I did not see anything in his play that suggested that he is headed for 1st grade. He did not seem to be the fastest player on the field nor did he make any breaks or tackle busts. I missed about 20 minutes of the second half searching for a coffee. When I got back, the Eels had almost caught  with the Storm after being a long way behind. Perhaps Bevan did his thing whilst I was away? But, I was unimpressed. Worst things are done to young players by selecting them for 1st grade before they are ready than by leaving them in the juniors too long. Maybe Tepai M is a case in point. He was not too impressive in U20`s on Sunday. His defence needs much improvement. As to the U20`s game by the Eels the less said the better. Mistakes all game with the ball.

      Are they coached at all?

  • If this kid is what our club is banking on to be our long term fullback for possibly 10 years. I think throwing him into the situation we find ourselves in would be a disaster.

The majority of our team is weak in the heart and the mind. They arnt showing anyone they want to play for the club or its fans. Imagine them rubbing that off onto our future stars.
    • X 2 exactly right here
  • The NRL also has very stringent guidelines on young players in terms of them training with the NRL. They can only train with the first grade side for limited time, and that makes it really difficult to prepare a kid, especially one who plays a key position like fullback, to fit into the side.

  • Is he u20's fullback? Did he played on Saturday?

  • Well he certainly stood out to me from what I was taking slight notice of whilst talking to mates. But I also definitely thought it was a shame about his size
