Bennett- troops never tire

After watching the grand final and the dragons all year, i have noticed that he is the only coach that saves a bench player till the final 20 or 15 mins(10 tonight). this is a strategy that seems to help them heaps, they seem to be able to whether they are winning or loosing use only 3 bench players and save the 4th for whenever they wanna use him.
I think bennett seems to utilise his bench the best out of anyone in the nrl, just like we did wehn it was 12 interchanges and rotated players like fui for impact he has modified his bench to suit the modern game.

so maybe with kearney(if he is the coach) he will utilise the bench to the best we can, maybe saving one player for impact when we really need it in the 2nd half..

Also hope that we give kearney time to make us a winning team, we cannot rely on a coach to come in and win the comp with unknow players the first season. they need to know the players and have the players they want. bennett came close to winning in the first season but he had players he wanted, he brought players like boyd and costigan that he had previously coached...
so i say give kearney time and if he doesnt perform let him see out his contract not be thrown to the heap and our cvlub made into shambles..

  • excellent observation........and my thoughts on bench rotation at Parra are these....WHY substitute hookers (9's) at pre designated time slots like Parra do ??? surely the bench is better served for props and second rowers....sure, you can argue that the number 9 add's extra spark, but to me it's a waste of an interchange when you have POOR TALENT at hooker like Parra does (at the expense of OUR STRENGTH, which is our Props and Second Row....now don't throw rotten tomatoes at me, but , for the sake of arguement.....does any one else apart from me MISS the ball running and rampaging Hindmarsh on ATTACK, with his abilyty to break tackles out wide and offload ??? surely a FRESH hindmarsh offers more to parra in attack than sub standard dummy half play we have at Parra right now and a FRESH Hindy adds more value than the dogged 40+ tackles hindmarsh we have today. I'm not saying Hindy's a bench player.....but MAYBE, 1 sub for hindy to freshen up and to add impact at the back end of games is worth considering?

there is absolutly no arguement that Hindmarsh has LOST ALL his pace......i have seen his speed in defense and his ability to be there at the right time to stop BROKEN plays from opponents, proves, to me at least, that Hindy's speed is still there

My point, i think BENCH strategy is still evolving and the 20mins off and 20mins on theory just doesn't cut it...it's too predictable....just like Fui....boy do we miss him when he goes off.....he plays the first 20, then missed the next 40 ??? dumb dumb dumb....and for what.....so Parra can intrerchange hookers 9's....surely rotating props and second rowers at intervals other than 20 minutes makes more sense......Eg, what if Fui is dominating......keep him out there for 10 more minutes, conserve you interchanges and maximise for players like him, 10 minutes before half time as well as the haltime interval is enough time to recover.....and for Fui to participate in 2 bursts in the second half (if needed)

what's better, more Fui, more EFFECTIVE Hindy, or two AVERAGE number 9's that are substituted are pre determinded intervals...makes no sense to me anyway

Just proves once again why Bennett is a super coach, and one step ahead of the game
  • rumour has it ''wayne bennett'' , may go back to the bronco's or cowboys ,i wonder if this is true?.
  • well said mate, cant wait to put this year behind us and look forward to a bright 2011, no i dont expect us to win a premeirship straight up its a re building stage at the moment bring on the future.
  • The Cowboys, now there's a challenge for Bennett!!!. I've heard the same, but unless I'm mistaken he still has 1 year left on his contract, which I'm guessing he will see out.
  • I wish everyone would see it this way, that we won't win a premiership the moment a new coach arrives, good things take time, and you must earn it, to truly appreciate it.
  • It don't think it has much to do with bench rotation.

Saints kick better than any team, chase better than most, make less errors, have really strong runs from their 1,2 5 on early tackles, and are full of very good defenders. It's only natural they will have more juice come the end of the game.

Furthermore, the Saints basically only had to win 2 games to end the seaon. They beat a reserve grade team in Manly nad has a week off... got the cobwebs out f the system hence has too much for the roosters,
  • Ive been a friend of Wayne Bennett for many years. He is a great bloke and a great coach. Contrary to those blockheads in the media who like to paint him as a one dimensional egotist, he is a funny warm individual. In terms of coaching ability at the moment there is Wayne and daylight second.
In all the years Ive been close to the Broncos camp when Wayne was coaching, Ive seen the Broncos practice maybe 2 or 3 set moves. - not bad for 21 years ! His style is that if the players get to the NRL they already know how to play football. He makes sure that he uncomplicates the game. Tackle when you need to and throw the ball around when you have it.
Thats the problem with coaches like Brian Smith, he complicates the game too much and with the extra weight of expectation in a grand final, the team usually cracks apart.
Wayne once told me that the greatest thing he learnt from Jack Gibson was that there was no use ranting and raving on game day, if the team wasnt ready on game day, they would probably be beaten. Games are won during the week.
One of my biggest regrets is that I didnt get to meet Jack.
I hope that Stephen Kearney understands these principals as well. Relax, guide the team, set standards, stick to those standards and never lose your cool.. and above all dont make the game too complicated !!
  • Your bench strategy relies on the strengths and weaknesses of your roster, it doesn't make it a good strategy for the eels because it works for the dragons.
  • Also several times this year that player has gone unused on the dragons bench
  • Perfecta, You would not find a player who played under him that doesnt respect the man. Hopefully Kearney learnt from the bloke. (I was going to say great man but Wayne would piss himself with laughter- he knows the coach is as much as being a parent to these young blokes as being a coach)
Jamie Soward in his post match interview reinterated this.
Would love Daniel Anderson to take some time and hang around with Wayne. Daniel has a ton of ability as a coach but he would learn so much from the calmness in the Saints camp at the moment.

"Randy,  An interesting one.
I suppose coaches trust certain players or believe they're the best fit for the team, even if club form or a high minute count aren't there.
I'd choose you for x-factor even if you only had 5 minutes of form."

Perhaps a rule that said 10 nrl games to be eligible for Aust would help everyone"
