Bennett officially returns to the Broncos.

THE return of Wayne Bennett is complete with the mastercoach agreeing to a $4 million deal to lead the resurrection of the Broncos.Bennett has inked a three-year contract until the end of 2017, ensuring he will return to the Broncos club he led to six titles between 1992 and 2006.The decision was made official at a press conference fronted by Broncos CEO Paul White and the sacked Anthony Griffin.Broncos players were informed of the development at an 11am crisis meeting at Red Hill headquarters.Despite leading the Broncos to a gutsy 28-22 defeat of the Warriors last Saturday night, Griffin was called to a meeting 24 hours later and informed he would not be at Red Hill next season. Griffin did an admirable job in front of the media on Monday afternoon given he had just received his marching orders from the club he had coached since 2009.“I’m a realist and I understand these decisions will be made about you. It’s a high risk high reward industry,” Griffin said.“Life’s full of challenges and this is one of them. ’ve done everything in my power to get the club to this point. It’s in a position where it’s going to succeed.“The board has to make decisions...I’m not going to be a victim.”Griffin has agreed to see out the rest of the year, while CEO Paul White, a staunch ally of the deposed coach, will remain in his current role next season “The next 10 weeks are an opportunity for us...we are as good as chance as anybody at figuring at the end of the year,” Griffin said.“The motivation for me is the group of players, the staff. It’s a very committed, happy place at the moment. We have an opportunity to get to the playoffs. This group is going to keep getting better and better.”Griffin also had a laugh when asked what he said to the players when he met with them on Monday morning.“I told them I got the arse...what can you say? I said I wasn’t going to be here next year but will be for the next 10 weeks.“There were some guys I had to give a cuddle. The two captains were very strong...there might have been a couple cheering.”TALLIS: BRONCOS NEED TO MOVE AHEAD, NOT GO BACK TO BENNETTWhite was tipped to resign in protest at Griffin’s sacking, but has agreed to honour the three-year extension, worth $466,000 annually, he received last December. As revealed by News Corporation on Sunday, Bennett had informed club directors he was ready to return to rebuild the Broncos empire he created. The board saw promise in Griffin but were concerned Bennett’s former assistant did not have the coaching skill-set to deliver the club’s next premiership. The pursuit of Bennett was hatched in May, involving a number of trips to Newcastle to visit the Knights coach.Respected board-member Joseph and Watt, the former News Limited executive who helped broker the sale of the Melbourne Storm, have had informal talks with Bennett.Broncos legend Steve Renouf praised Griffin’s character but believes Bennett, who delivered Brisbane’s first and last titles 14 years apart, is in a league of his own.“It’s time to bring Wayne back,” he said.“I just think it’s timely, this team we have, the influence of someone like Wayne, he can push it to the next level.“I like some of the footy we’ve been playing but these close games we’ve been losing, I don’t think it would be happening under Wayne and that’s the difference.“I’m not bagging Hook, he’s a good bloke and a good coach, but Wayne can take that club to the next level.”

  • Ye good point, I'd say that is the main reason he left.
  • feel sorry for griffin- since Kearney got employed by pirtek to run water as griffins assisrant the broncos record has been abysmal.
  • first time Bennett had an average team and he did nothing.
any half decent coach could have coached the qld origin team in the 1990s to premierships. especially with the systematic cap rorting of the thoroughbreds and signing every young qld player to warehouse them .
that's why Gibson was great turned around average teams and made them good and turned good teams into great
