Bennett 3-Year Deal Done with Rabbits

Wayne Bennett has confirmed he has signed a three-year deal at South Sydney and will return to the club next year to work with a side he insists can go places.

Dolphins coach Bennett, 74, told AAP on Tuesday morning he has unfinished business at the club he coached to to two preliminary finals and a grand final from 2019-2021.

"I am going back to Souths for three years," Bennett said.

"I like the people there and I like the club and what it stands for.

"I know a number of the players. There is some good talent there and we can do something.

"I just want to get back there and I like that part of Sydney as well. It is easy to live there."

When asked if he had unfinished business he said there "was in a way".

He will take over a club that is currently in last place on the NRL ladder.

Bennett has always stated that success starts in the front office and he has a close relationship with CEO Blake Solly and chairman Nick Pappas.

"I have a good rapport with everybody there," he said.

"I had a great three years there and I am looking forward to going back."

The Rabbitohs will confirm Bennett's return officially on Tuesday.

  • Now we can focus on our new coach and hopefully make Bennett regret his decision not to come to the EELS.

  • Was always a slim chance he'd come here anyway. If I was Wayne I'd 100% be going to Souths as well

    • 100% Michael

Bennett seems the type of guy that would take great pleasure in telling us no when he didn't get what he wanted initially

    • That's not what happened.

    • Cool story bro, but that is absolute bullshit, he never approached us.

  • "I just want to get back there and I like that part of Sydney as well. It is easy to live there."

of course it's easier for him haha seven minutes to the ground not but fair enough Sydney driving isn't too easy hahs  + the benefits and ease of dealing with millionaires as opposed to us ce la vie

I'd say it was written in the clouds the job was his at south's awhile back. South's have been doing poorly for a bit longer than us even.

    • I don't think many coaches would mind being second choice to Wayne Bennett.

The good thing is with Souths and Bennett locked away we should have the majority of the coaching conversations all focused around us for the rest of the year.

        • Coryn they would have felt compelled to show a genuine attempt at getting Wayne. If they didn't release it contemporaneously then everyone is probably going to call bullshit if in 12 months time or something they say oh yeah we had a crack at Wayne. It's the same reason for terminating Arthur now. If they didn't then members would say you didn't get Wayne because you weren't willing to sack Arthur. It's all for the optics.

At the end of the day if Wayne doesn't want to coach Parra then f the old bugger. We want someone who wants the gig after all.

          • Michael we both posted at exactly 11:48am with the similar themes & ideas in mind. Bwahhaa. Synchronicity.

            • Hahaha - needless to say I agree with your comment. If I'm on the board I'm probably doing the same thing. Even though it makes them look a bit inept it avoids and suggestion of outright negligence

"Then again, how often do you see coaches change a winning team? In any form of the game? Very rarely does a coach make an unforced change to a team, if they do it is one change."

His individual stats read quite well but he stifles the attack , often the ball dies with him.
You can't have 4 points of attack it becomes disjointed, 3 works well.
