I know not everyone here is the biggest fan of Ben Smith but I'm sure we can all agree he was an amazing player for us back in 2005-2007 and although he was never the same after his knee injuries, he was always one of our most consistent players alongside Hindmarsh (from 2008 through to 2012) before we started complaining about his excessive penalties. Honestly, his penalties have been justified at times and at other times, not exactly so, purely because the referees did their homework and realised he was the only player in our team who would slow down the opposition in defence the most and so they penalised him to even out the penalty count. I know that when we had Hindy and Ben Smith in the 2nd row, our defence always felt just a little bit more solid, and when he was out due to injury it was always so frustrating because our defence would be poorer.
He has been a 1 club man that has stuck it through with this club despite having some good offers elsewhere during the early parts of his career and we have to appreciate his loyalty to this club. He has also helped instil culture at this club and has been a major reason why Hayne has stuck around when some of his other mates have moved on. Will never forget his run to chase down Marshall and some of the awesome stuff he did in 05 and 07 to get us to the finals. Hope we cheer extra loud for him on Friday night!
