Just an extra mind in the backroom that can help in talent identification. Granted the game and type of player has changed rapidly since he last coached in the NRL but he can still tell talent and how to negotiate.
Not sure the Casino Cougars would let 72 year old Smith out of his contract LB. haha. he was an amazing administrator As well as coach. The Eels won 7 or 8 club championships whilst he was in charge for 9 years.
That is the thing, he brought juniors through well. Was his approach to mind games great? No, but his job would have nothing to do with the team on field. It would be help in recruitment and maybe even pathways too. His mind is valuable. Plus, the fact he put his hand up for the Eels job in late 2024 shows he wants in the game somewhere, this role could be perfect.
I would not have him involved with the squad as too many cooks and sometimes they can get in the way. But backroom role off the field? I feel would be perfect.

Pleased we didn't go overboard with Barnett as we have some tremendous young forwards coming through, I'm backing them especially after watching pre season angry last weeks game of the cup
Barnett would have been a terrible signing! I am so glad we missed him. WHY NOT sign Nelson for that money Parramatta retention needs to be looked at and the reason as to why and how to fix this long term. How can we compete with the other top four teams when we dont have TPA's. This needs to be studied more
"One thing is very obvious, we need to bench the plodders like Jr and JDB. Hopgood has been bog average too.
Walker must start at lock.
Bring in Moretti, him and the new Doorey will shatter defences."

LB, couldn't comment on Brian Smith as not sure his involvement / networking / stature within the game now?
But 100% with you on that Smith style of person. If that's Brian Smith himself, great, if its someone else, great.
What it isn't, is what we have currently.
