He has been a success.
At getting a team from the bottom of the ladder.
In a sense he has been, making us relevant when we were a laughing stock, we were what Wests are now. Couldn't attract players now we are a middle to top team consistently. Yeah he hasn't won a comp but his job coming in firstly was making us competitive.
I don't think anyone can really claim he has been anything other than a success. I guess it's the level of success he can be judged on. I do believe he has reached his ceiling and won't win a premiership though.

He could be a resuscitation coach, bringing dying teams back to life, then Wayne Bennett type takes over to win a title. Nothing wrong with that
A better Nathan Brown type, Brown was seen as a resuscitation coach but not great, BA will be better.
BA is definitely better at rebuilds than Nathan Brown is.
That is the best explanation and thoughts on coaching I think I have heard about the Eels and BA.

But the best thing about Gus is that on 4 occasions over the years he has stated during eels games that Parramatta play like they don't have a game plan ans other occasions he has said that when the see's parrs play he can't see a game plan .

Gus sacked griffin because the panthers were going to lose Nathan cleary to the tigers so had to re-hire ivan. It had to happen before the finals because it would have been a suicidal decision to sack griffin if he had won the comp or even made the GF.
But yeah I get your point.
Let's face it , Gus is one of the most overrated coaches in history .
He won a comp with the dogs in 88 which only 12 months earlier made a grand final and had a international forward pack , Warren Ryan built that team .
He them went to the Panthers which had all these top young players come through and some established stars which was built by Ron Willy plus he poached a few rep players from the dogs .
He then went to the roosters in 1996 and was their until the end of 99 and in that time had the greatest and biggest open cheque book the game has seen . The chooks bought start Player after star player every year he was there yet he he couldn't even get them to a GF
At origin level he was a champion no question , as someone to help build a clubs junior system again a champion but as a club coach he has been blessed to of always been at the right place at the right time .
