Attending Games - Your Attitude

I thought this might be a worthwhile blog for Larissa and the team. We've just had two home games at Parramatta and we are about to have our first home game at ANZ. The crowd against Manly was good. The numbers against Souths were a little disappointing. To be honest, I expected both of these games to sell out. The club is trying to improve the match day experience and there is a strong push to develop Parramatta (Pirtek)) Stadium. I'm not sure that those crowd figures help the cause.Given fine weather and the Easter Show, we would expect a very big crowd for the Tigers game at ANZ.So, why hasnt Pirtek sold out in the first two matches? The team has played great at home and the atmosphere has been fantastic. The ground has great views for Rugby League matches. If we talk about food prices etc, the prices will be no different to ANZ, and every ANZ crowd will be bigger than 18000. (I know ANZ holds more but if Pirtek sold out I wouldn't make the comparison). So why hasn't Pirtek sold out this year? As a member, I love going to Parramatta (Pirtek) Stadium. It's home, just like Cumberland Oval was home. I don't like going to ANZ ( box invitations aside -thanks again Chris) because the views aren't great, transport is a pain and we just don't play well there. It's not home.I'm sure the membership team, and indeed our club as a whole, would be keen to get some feedback.

  • Sixties, I'll use Suncorp as an example.

I have been to many games here in Bris and the Parra, Souths and St George games are very well represented by the away team fans. My theory.

For me as a Eels fan in Bris, I have 1 opportunity to see my team play locally. So I like many Eels fans turn up in force. The broncos fans on the other hand have multiple opportunities and therefore don't always turn up. I've seen Eels games up here where you'd swear the Eels are the home side because the broncs fan have gone missing. I don't know if that's because the Eels have a good record and they'd rather not be at the ground for a loss or they just can't be bothered.

In Sydney, with many teams, it's not hard to go and see your team play most weeks even if it's an away game to another Sydney team.

So yes, as the team improves I think you'll see crowds improve but you will alway get those games where the fans don't turn up because you down there are spoilt for choice and opportunities.
    • It's the same at titans home games...which I go to every year....Parra fans are very.. very well represented...U could swear it was a Parra home..

    • Yeah, I love seeing you guys outshine the home crowd.
  • I've missed both the games at home so far mainly because i have a new born and i live on the central coast so staying in Sydney after work to watch a game of footy just doesn't work. But I've given away my tickets to a friend each time.
ANZ games i usually avoid as i hate everything about that stadium ive always said if we could have a parra stadium only package I'd buy that one.

That been said I am actually going this weekend witch I'm looking forward to as I've never gone this long into a season without going to a game.
  • I have Foxtel. Part of the trade off in getting Fox was that the money I saved by not going to games would pay for it. Since then I haven't been to a game at Parra Stadium.
    • i did the same thing before i left sydney, Foxtel was $50 a month, it's costed roughly $50 per game to attend which are about 2 home games a month so i saved $50 a month and when you have a young family and are paying off a morgate it's cheaper. I went to aodd game here and there maybe 2 a season but it was much better $$$ wise to have foxtel.

  • Probably because although we are excited about our team finally being on the 'up', it is still early days.
I think we need to not forget just how much shite has gone down at this club over the past few years.
If we win a few games in a row or hit the top of the ladder, watch them numbers grow!
  • Agree Ace.
Last time I was at Robina the entire crowd around me were Parra fans.
  • For me the toughest game to get is the Friday night game. Friday night traffic in Sydney is horrendous and where I live, public transport is not a realistic option.
  • I think a number of things have contributed to lower crowd numbers. Older people do not like going to night games. If I asked my dad to come to a night game he would say 'I might as well put the television and a seat in the backyard and get cold at home". If an aging parent or friend won't go to night games, add another 2 or 3 people that would have gone with them. The cost of tickets is ridiculous. $50.00 for decent stand ticket is way over the odds. I went to see The Sydney Symphony Orchestra with James Morrison and it was $35.00. Try explaining that price difference to a non football loving partner. Cheaper to get Foxtel. The team has been so poor for so long that many fans have gotten out of the habit of going. No fun paying a lot of money to watch 1 game and see a flogging week in week out. At least if there was a reserve grade and under 23's you get some value plus feel more a part of the club watching all 3 grades and seeing players progress. Manly once had a reserve grade front row who were all internationals and that has to be good for teaching up and coming players how to play the game. Being in a corporate box certainly makes a difference especially at ANZ so feel free Chris (whoever you are) to drop me a spare ticket!!) Food prices are also ridiculous. $4.50 for a bottle of water? Come on! I can take my boys out boat fishing for an entire day for way less than taking them to the footy and listen to the footy on the radio. We also don't need a manufactured game day experience. Please no more screaming ground announcers and stupid promotions like "Louder". The crowd makes its own experience if the quality of the football is good enough. People go to watch football. If I want a circus I will go to the circus. In a nutshell: fewer night games, cheaper tickets, cheaper food prices, play at Pirtek, bring back reserve grade and under 23's and no game day gimmicks or screaming ground announcers. We knew how to do game day properly for 40 years (just like education and small Government) and then lost it. It wont be hard to get it back if we just go back to the future a bit.
