Are we a divided club?

After all the election hate blogs and from what people are saying about those campaigning for different members is it any surprise the team does what it does? I live in central west nsw with 2 young kids and as such i can't really go to a game so a membership is not an option. What I do like is going on this site an hearing from other fans and buying our jerseys as my way of supporting. From what I've seen the people commenting I this site are divided as much as the board. I go on here every day and for the past week all I've seen is board related propaganda. Add to that the treatment some posters get on here (and yes I know there are some irrelevant and silly posts) and I wonder if at a grass roots level we aren't supporting our team as we should. It would be naive to think players don't check this site and it can't be good for them too see themselves paid out every week. I think constructive criticism is valid and helpful but some fans may be hesitant to contribute to this site because of the abuse other members (and players, has anyone thought that some current players may have profiles here??) cop? I know myself I waited 2 years to post a opinion?

  • What is said on this site should have absolutely nothing to do with what happens on the field. If players are not playing with heart because of what's said here then they have a real problem. There are probably members here that are not even eels fans at all and just come to stir the pot. How about we just become members of other teams forums and abuse that team if it means it will effect their on field performances. As for being abused by other members just try to remember these are only words on a monitor. They are not going to jump out and slap you in the face. Make a comment and ignore replies you don't like.

    • If that's all you took from this then either I haven't written it properly or your focusing on the wrong thing
  • BB do you want a violin to go with that?

    • That's exactly the reaction I'm talking about. I'm not asking for sympathy for players or posters however I think the vitriol on this site can sometimes be an issue. I also know having followed this site for a number of years that you are a prolific and popular poster. Hence I cannot disagree too much with you or I shall be relegated to the likes of chuck and dr j. Nothing against you (
but moreso those who take it another level... It's just a blog people :)
    • Thanks buddy and I just want to say I'm no stranger to a good payout... Expect some in the future lol. I know people let fly on the internet more so than they would in real life and I suppose I was posing a more philosophical point that we can be better than that d not eat our own so to speak. Most people have taken what I've said as that I am precious which is not the case, I love the banter in this site, it's one of the reasons I visit it. I'm fine with it but from some of the other posts it seems some people are not. You are probably right though it's one of those forums whereby you enter at your own risk lol

    • Thanks and I understand your point. I suppose what I'm trying to get across is that yes they are professional athletes and that's why they kick goals from sidelines and why some 80kg guys are tackling 120kg guys but I still think there is some side of them that gets damaged reading this day after day. Maybe they shouldn't expose them self to it I suppose...
  • hahaha. Isnt Ozkan dead?

  • Horo I think this is a place where people can express a reasonable point I view as you think it is. Again you are a poster who has proven my point by making a slur about the the people from the area I live in. This is exactly why people feel, especially those from outside of Sydney, they can't contribute for a while. I mention I am from central west and you make a crack... Where are you from I'm sure I could be low brow too
  • Hi Beer Baron, this is a fair question and it's one I've at times struggled with and it's one that I have at time fought to the death to defend. Now I'm going to go back a little, and some of this may be self-indulgent but bear with me.

I trained and worked as a journalist. As a young journalist, you have objectivity smashed into you at every turn. I decided to write a blog that went against that. That covered Parramatta from a supporter's view, that was optimistic and "one eyed".

Eventually, I decided to convert my little blog into a space for all Eels fans to write their opinions. And I quickly discovered that not all Eels fans felt like me. At the end of a loss, other supporters weren't finding the positives I were. Other supporters were far-less forgiving on players than I was. Other supporters got far more depressed than I did after I lost.

And it took me quite a while, and I there were plenty of times I almost decided to shut this site down, to come to terms with that. I had relatives of players telling me how awful the site was. I had board members telling me how awful the site was. Except, every month the site kept growing and growing.

And eventually, I came to realise that this is sport. That the passion that sport engenders promotes extreme reactions. That sport is one of the few things in life that lifts people above the tedium of every day life and that it doesn't matter if you are rich or poor, what your race is or whatever. At the end of the day, every person who comes to this site has an extreme passion for the Eels.

That's what brings us together. But beyond that we disagree. We think each other are stupid and can't see the truth. We disagree with the coach. We disagree with the executive. But in the end we all just want our team to be better. And you know what, we like to disagree. Because if everyone agreed, we would all get very, very bored of saying. +1 after every comment.

You can go to any team forum, in any sport, in any place in the world, and it's exactly the same.

So to get back to your initial question. Their are a number of people who aren't in line with the rest of us. Mostly their people who wanted jobs at the club and didn't get one, Or their people who fell off the gravy train. I hope those people will now choose to put the club first.

But from my observation, the team within the club are actually really united and working towards a common cause. And that's the most important thing.

    • Thank you Phil I appreciate immensely that you have heard and responded to my concerns. For reading this and other posts I assumed you had training in journalism and the set up this site is a credit to you. It's nice to know that you can acknowledge the faults and limits and it makes us "casual" posters feel welcome. Thank you for enabling this site and the views expressed
