  • I watched that yesterday, and found it to be mostly a waste of time.

The obstruction call on Paulo I think was correct. Gutho ran through the hole that was created by the Dragons player being taken out of the line.

The penalty try, I reckon that one is 50/50 at best. I still think Dufty fell over more because he saw the post coming straight at him, and for that reason I don't think he was ever getting to the ball first. If they are going to award penalty tries for incidents like that, then the standard has been set, but I'll bet we see plenty more like this that don't even get pulled up as a penalty.

There was no mention of other key moments, like the above horizontal tackle on Gutho, or the professional foul by Norman when he tackled Fergo 5 out from the line while blatantly offside.

      • How many times do you see a player get tackled with the ball on the last tackle and throw out a wild pass to try to continue the play, only for the ref to say they called held and the ball gets handed over to the other team? It happens every week, and not once in recent years has that scenario been pulled up as a penalty. Using the precedent of the Cartwright call, every one of those now has to be called a penalty.

Annesley is a politician, nothing more, nothing less. All he does is offer spin in these reviews.

          • What I don't get about that call is that our challenge was successful but we actually ended up worse off than we would have if we didn't challenge! How in the actual fuck does that work?

      • So what your trying to say, is the NRL is corrupt. Most of us already knew that.

    • The penalty try was 50/50, but I was OK with it being given. If you asked BA what he'd prefer, giving away a penalty try or losing a man for 10 minutes, he'd take the latter every time.

The Paulo obstruction was an absolute joke. As Gus said on 100% Footy, if Gutho doesn't score a try, they don't even look at it, but because he scores a try they go all the way back. I just watched Annesleys description of that decision and he says,

"Junior Paulo makes contact with a defender, and Clint Gutherson takes advantage of the space created."

What an absolute load of crap. Clint Gutherson supported Dylan Brown and didn't get possession until he was 10m into the back field, he didn't take any advantage of any gap created. Tyrell Fuimono, (the supposedly obstructed defender), ran into Junior.

Graham Annesley is so completely out of his depth.

      • Gee Brett, you are right about the obstruction call. I just went and watched it again, and Gutho is a good 15m past the point where Paulo made contact when he gets the ball.

        • I know, and none of the neanderthals in the media at the briefing held him accountable over it. Most of them probably have no idea themselves.

          • Here is the black and white (lol) of the rule:

            https://www.nrl.com/news/2013/03/07/laws-of-the-game-obstruction/

Who knows if this is current or not. Annesley would 100% argue that Paulo initiated contact, and thus claim the correct call was made. This is where the rule is open to interpretation. If the try had been awarded, Annesley would have just said the Dragons player initiated contact, nothing to see here.

            Laws of the Game: Obstruction
The onus is on the attacking players or ‘block-runn
  • I refuse to blame ref's unless it's a wrong call that costs a game.

We were never going to win that game we were simply out played.

As for Browns charge that's the game now we will see plenty of those charges this year

    • I'm not blaming the ref for that loss. We played terrible panicked football. But there were many diabolical calls in that game that should be scrutinised. Just because they didn't cost us the game, doesn't mean they should be let go. Atkins and Perenara should be having a week off after that one if the refs boss is serious.
